Nursing Text Books and Intro

Hello everyone! Just like the rest of you fine ladies and gents, I too am aspiring to be a nurse! I plan to go for my ADN at my community college in a year and a half! After I get my new house (woo hoo!), I plan on volunteering at my local hospital (hopefully in the ER) to see how it goes.

I have a question. What text books did your college recommend you buy for: Human Anatomy, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Microbiology? Do you have any personal recommendations for books? I tend to research everything until I'm blue in the face. :p Also, I have a year and a half until college (saving up money during that time frame), so I might as well get a head start. Hopefully, this will help me out since I don't have any medical history; LVN, Nurse Assistant or anything. :o I hope I won't be too behind the other fine people entering the nursing program.

I hope I didn't forget anything... thank you so much for all of your help and information!

Different schools require different books. Best thing to do is if you have a school in mind, find out what books are required that aren't likely to change and then buy those. Maybe take a job as a CNA to get the 'feel' of things,

a recommended book i had that i loved for A&P was Atlas of Human Anatomy. other than that i just got the required textbooks which vary from school to school.

Honestly, I wouldn't buy any textbooks until you take the classes, just simply because they are bound to change between now & then. If you really want to read up on stuff, maybe grab one of the "Incredibly Easy" or "Dummies" books on Anatomy, Physiology, etc.

if you are just wanting to get some to get familiiar with, you could always find out what your school uses and then purchase one edition older on Ebay. If you go one edition back they are DIRT cheap!

for Micro we used Microbiology by Jacqueline Black. For A&P, Marieb is popular as is Martini.

I don't think it would be a bad idea to have an extra older copy if you could get it cheap. You could cut out the pics to make flashcards! LOL
