Unless you were one of those rare trail blazers back in the 1960s, a female had few options,they were teacher,nurse,nun or wife and mother, I picked nurse because I knew I was not cut out at all to be a teacher or a nun, turned out I had a bit of a nack for nursing,just a bit. 5.Every once in a while I knew I made a big difference in a persons life for the better.6.Manditory Overtime,there were a lot of things I did not like but that is the one thing that broke me.7.NO! 8.Male nurses are great, I worked in Pgh Pa, we have a higher than usual number of male nurses in the area because a lot of men went into nursing when the steel industry collasped. 9.Someone who assist his or her fellow human beings in a million different ways. 10.I can see my self doing many things and nursing is just one of them, I am on a hiatus right now and do not know if I am going back to nursing or not. I am not even sure if I am ever going to work for pay again.11.In 20 years I will be 72 years old[God Willing]and I will most likely be using more health care than I provide.

4)An interesting career, orginally wanted to be a pediatric nurse, as I was a Nanny previosuly, but then changed my mind and went to adults.

5) The Challenge and learning new things.

6) The pay in England, but now I am in the USA, the pay is excellent, compared to the UK. Also the staffing issue is a big problem in England, so we never got breaks and we were always understaffed.

7) No. Nurses do get paid well in the USA, well it depends on what stae you are in, but in Minnesota its not too bad. It is a shame that there is'nt a standard pay scale, regardless of where you live, but standard of living is higher and lower etc.........

8) Excellent, we need more men. It balances out the workplace better.

9) Someone who is a professional person, who makes a career out of caring for the sick and the no so sick.

10) No, I have studied hard to get where I am, and I am not going to change, as I love the job. Although very hard work, nursing is a rewarding field.

11) I do not know, but it will be exciting to find out. Hope this information helps. Emma

After having two days to think about it I want to be more specific about number 5.this is what I like in this order a. cardiology b. doing admissions and admission assessment c. teaching

this is in response to your survey:

1 Female

2 46 years

3 England

4 Wanted to do something worthwhile. Changed careers in late 30s.

5 Making patients comfortable. Communication.

6 Lousy pay. Night duty.

7 Definitely not.

8 I feel fine about working with male nurses. Maybe if more men entered the profession we would be taken seriously when our pay increases were reviewed. Pay is much better over here in 'male-dominated' professions such as police and firefighting. They would just laugh if they were offered what we get. I also enjoy working with males and feel that they often bring a different perspective to situations.

9 A skilled person, educator, confidante (many other things besides).

10 Would stay in profession, but would like to become clinical nurse specialist or nurse consultant.

11 I hope that nurses will be taken more seriously in terms of recognition for the considerable skills we are acquiring and the enormous difference we can make to people's lives. I would like to see the 'wingeing' disappear from nursing because that would mean that we were satisfied with our lot in life, i.e. better staffing, better pay and conditions.

As a footnote, I can't really complain about my conditions because I work in the field of transplant and I have to say that my working conditions are the best I have experienced so far. You wouldn't believe the difference this makes to staff morale. I had come from a very busy acute/emergency medical ward in another city where we nurses were literally worked to the point of 'burnout' and self-esteem among staff was as low as it could get sometimes.

So you see, my only real problem now is pay. I would like to see nurses world-wide fairly paid for what is a dedicated, difficult and highly skilled job. I hope this answers your questions. Good luck with the survey.

4. At the time (and maybe a little bit now) it was fairly highly regarded as a profession. Didn't want to work 9-5 in an office and knew I could work with people and make a difference.

5. Still the basics- making someone comfortable. Being able to solve problems, make descisions, be innovative and motivate those around me.

6. The general lack of respect that some of the public have for us.

7. No-not in comparison to other public service like the police and armed forces. We are very low paid for the amount of practical and academic training which we receive.

8. Male nurses (because their isn't a lot of them) are ALWAYS promoted quicker than women. I've found that generally they are out for management positions rather than the 'nitty gritty'. On the other hand, however, I think they can counter-balance the backstabbing that goes on in a hospital environment.

9. Professional-able to be an equal academically with the best of them! I DO NOT want to be associated with Florence and everything her handmaiden reputation stood for!

10. Never-I've worked too hard in this one!!

11. Hopefully to a more elevated position in the world of education, management or academia!!!

9)nurse- the bearer of all burdens, able to do 6 things at once, know all, the protector, motherer.

10)I could see myself being a daycare provider, social worker, psychologist,etc. Nursing may not be for me forever.

11)It will lead me out of the hospital and into the community.
