Hey Natkat

Weve all been there at sometime or another. SOme of us are still there. With me coffee worked at first, then I got immune to it, so it doesnt do any good as far as keeping me up to study. Get some rest..I know it hard but if you dont youll get sick and then you wont be able to function. IT gets tougher when were older I know first hand. Hopefully you only have 8 weeks to go like I do...Just keep on plugging, youll be done before you know it and look back and say "I DID IT"

I was surprised when I got to my first day of nursing school to find out how many people over 35 were in my class. I'm 40, and there is about a quarter of the class in the over 35 range. 40 is the new 20, right? Someone tell my knees that after I've spent 12 hours at the hospital for clinicals.

I've been reading this forum for a few weeks now and I've been surprised too at the number of non-traditional aged students. And gladly so! I'm 42 and will be 43 when I enter the program in the fall. I'll be 45 when I come out of school. Yikes! I know people who have grandchildren at that age! Ah, well, this time will come and go anyway, so I may as well fulfill this life-long dream! :heartbeat:nurse::heartbeat

Right this moment I am 38. I graduate this May...wooo hooo. I have been in school since August 2002. I am a single parent of two children, now 13 and 10 and left my abusive husband the weekend before I started my prerequisites for nursing (he's still angry with me for leaving - hello!)

During my prerequisites I fought my ex husband in court for sole legal and sole physical custody of our children. He had a lawyer, I did not. It took 1 1/2 years of my studying my butt off to understand all of that legal stuff, but I won in the end! During that time I also had his convicted of assualt for violating my restraining orders - that time he got a free laywer b/c it was a quasi criminal case. I even had to cross examine in court! It was crazy, I did not think I could do it. I still won. His lawyer did not say a word to me, but in the hall she bowed her head in congratulations. It was truly amazing - although I still do not agree with the way "court" works and how they do not take into consideration "what is best for the children".

During that "court time" I got accepted, on my first try, to a private BSN college and went. I also searched high and low for scholarships. My searching paid off and my full $40,000/year tuition/fees/etc was paid as well as a monthly stipend. Which totally helped since my ex is always playing games with my support check.

Anyway, I am still working through the court system as my ex does not like to abide by the rules. I hope to write a book someday soon because breaking the cycle, surviving and thriving is possible.

Boy I cannot wait to graduate and move on even more. OOO the possibilities for my children and I.

Peace to all.

Hi I'm was 43 on thursday, took the nclex yesterday and passes !!!!! I very much enjoyed the younger students in my class. As far as house work is concered; It does manage to get done. And if it doesn't , it will wait for you. I have a 7 year old and I also work with the hubby in our restaurant. Nursing school was really challenging. Kids, work, papers , but you can do it. The best of luck to you!!!

50 year old here(and not the oldest one in my class!)... started doing prereq's when I was 46 and will graduate in May:w00t:This is the hardest thing I've ever done....Had to continue working 5 x/week during school (in unrelated field), and got a CNA job in addition last summer (1-2x/week). I'm in the evening program which means getting home from clinical after midnight, then getting up 5 hours later and starting all over again:smilecoffeeIlovecof! Not to mention lecture 2 times a week, studying, reading, writing papers and care plans and, oh yeah - being spot on during clinical. Hardly see my kids during the week(ages 9 and 14). Someone asked me the name of my daughters physics teacher the other day and I didn't know it! I get emails from my kid's schools all the time asking for volunteers to do this and that, and I never can..

..BUT - it's almost done and I have the satisfaction of knowing that I made it (with an awesome GPA, by the way...). My husband and kids are proud of me and my friends can't believe I'm actually going to be a RN - neither can I!:D

Congratulations to everyone else who is graduating in May - especially the "over 35's"! It's been a long, crazy trip -but we made it:yeah:

congrats on you up comming graduation!!!! I finished in Dec. Just took the nclex and passed ( comp stopped at 75 questions) This has been a crazy trip, I can't wait to start working.

the best of luck to you

Yeah...i'm not alone. :yeah:

I am 36 currently taking pre-reqs and hopefully starting nursing school in 2010. I want to wait until my son graduates high school and then i will start the next chapter in my life. I had wanted to go back to school for a number of years but kept thinking how it would be impossible or it would take too long. Little did I realize that the years that I was thinking about it, i could have been done with my pre-reqs already.

Well i think I look and feel young and age is not really an issue with me. The problem is trying to figure out how I am going to support myself while i'm in school full time. My husband does not make enough money to cover everything by himself. That is the only thing driving me completely insane but I have 2 yrs to figure it out. Any suggestions?

Wow! I too, have been in court over this duration with an ex (but for child support). He had a "father's rights" lawyer and hadn't paid child support in 15 years, lol!! I represented myself all this time as well- but what made me so proud in court was two remarks: 1)the clerk asked me when I was due to graduate law school, and 2) as I was walking to the conferance room to add something to an order I'd drawn up, the judge called my name and said "Very nice work on that order!" :wink2:

Hi, well congrats on your decision to attend nursing school. With regards to the money, try applying to a community college nursing program. The tutition is significantly less. My hubby and I sat down and made a financial plan and pretty much stuck to it. It was really really hard around the holidays not to spend. We traded in a car with a loan on it for a used car with no loan payment. We saved alot by cooking and eating home rather than going out. I hope this helps. oh! look into as many grants as possible. the best of luck

I've read all of the posts and have come to the conclusion I'm the world's oldest Nursing student at 60. I'll graduate LPN school in January and will be 61. In my class, I know of a male student who is 59 and another female who is 55. There may be more. I'm definitely older than all of my instructors and I wouldn't call any of them "kids."

I am 40. I have a sick husband and 3 children who are grown. My middle child(daughter) is expecting her first child. That makes me a Grandma to be! I am fortunate to be in a school and class that is mostly people my age or a little older. The younger people are great, though. Most of them say its like going to school with their parents! That's ok, some of them remind me of my kids! :D I graduate next year at this time so I will be 41 before all is said and done.:nuke:
