Nursing student working with CMA

Senior Nursing student here, I was paired with a very knowledeable CMA in a clinic type setting seeing everything from sick children to well baby check ups to high school students. We got the initial vitals but no head to toe assessment, no focused assessment, we did interview asking about signs, symptoms, how long, what makes it worse, what makes it better. I wanted to do my assessment but I was not sure how I should go about it without offending the CMA. I was wondering if anyone has any advice or tips on how I should go about handling this next time. Should I just step in and do my assessment should I ask if it is ok if I perform my assessment. Am I making to much of this?

Thank You to anyone taking time to read this.
