Question

Nursing Students Student Assist

Published

I have just registered as a new member. I am an LPN student and I am hoping that by registering as a member, I would be able to get assistance in preparing for my exams and homework.

I would like to get an answer to this question and show how the answer /solution was arrived at -

A client post-gastrectomy has an order for IV fluids to maintain hydration. Since 1 liter of a 5% dextrose solution contain 50 g of sugar, 3 liters/day would supply approximately how many kilocalories?

Thank you, I hope I will benefit a lot from being a member.

One gram of carbs has 4 kcals

So 50 x 4 = 200 kcals per liter. Three liters would supply 600 kcals.

Hi, tony g!

Tweety's answer for you is correct. There was an exact question like that on my state board exam for a 1 liter bottle (no bags back in 1975) of D5W and I never forgot it!

Good luck with your LPN studies. See you on the student forums!

Welcome to allnurses! :welcome:

Tweety, will I EVER be as smart as you? :bowingpur
