Nursing Specialties?

i wanted to know how in the world do you get into a specialtie field? i am only taking my pre-reqs right now. But when you become and RN or BSN how do you get certified for a specialtiy unit such as L&D, neonatal, ER, ICU whatever you want to be in. Do you take a test? Do you learn a special field in nursing classes? if you know any information please let me know. Thanks in advance! :)

Hi Koda53,

I am currently a pre-nursing student, hoping to start clinicals in the fall.

From the nurses and nursing students I have talked to you specialize once you have your RN and you are working in a hospital. There are so many nursing jobs available you will probably be able to pick an area you enjoy once you graduate.

Also the way the nursing programs are set up you learn various areas in your clinical rotations. A semester is usually broken up into areas like med/surg, oncology, peds, labor and delivery, er, or, etc.

From your clinical rotations you will probably really enjoy one area and not really enjoy another area.

Also, once you are working for a hospital your education continues, the hospital will provide you with options to get certified in different specialities or you can take classes outside of the hospital to specialize.

That is what is so great about nursing, there are so many options and interests for everyone!
