Does anyone know anything about the nursing schools in Oregon?
Right now I am looking into going to either Chemeketa Community college and getting what I think is an ADN then transferring to OHSU for a BSN
or...
going straight to OHSU and doing a BSN.
Does anyone know ANYTHING about these two schools...
Also, how competitive is it to get into nursing school. When I spoke to a counselor she said it was very competitive, which I expect.
To give you some background, I already have a BS degree, so I am not too worried....
Just would like some more info on nursing school from people with experience!!!
Chemeketa has a great Nursing Program and turns out great Nurses! I graduated with ADN in 1990 and am very proud that my son is also getting his Chemeketa ADN this June 2005.
I don't know what the "cleaning up their act" comment someone made was about... Chemeketa has always had a good reputation. Sounds to me like someone who couldn't get into the Chemeketa program and had to settle for Linn-Binton.
OHSU is VERY competitive. Out of 900+ applicants this year they accepted ~140. Minimum cumulative GPA is upwards of 3.7. not trying to scare you, just be prepared. Your prior degreee will help IF its health care related & you have a good GPA. OHSU is a very good school if you can get in. Don't despair if not though. You can always start at a Comm. college for your ADN and then transfer to OHSU for your BSN quite easily (many RN's do it online!). Good luck to you. Oh, and community service/volunteer work is also very helpful for OHSU.

I found it rather interesting and realize I made a good choice
There are several nursing schools in Portland, Oregon. I believe one of the best kept secrets if you're looking for a BSN is Walla Walla. I graduated from their program. My classes were small and all of my teachers really were interested in teaching. I felt I got some of the best educational experiences around while at this college. Though their University is located in Walla Walla Washington; most people don't realize that their nursing program is located here in Portland, next door to the Portland Adventist Hospital. If you are looking for a BSN school in Portland I would highly recommend checking them out. The nursing boards were a breeze for me to pass as I was fully prepared and I had lots of job opportunities after my graduation both from clinical experiences as well as non-clinical. It opened a lot of doors for me.
I have a couple of questions. First what is OHSU? I have never heard of it myself. I only know of a few universities in Oregon. That would be SOU, OU, OSU, and OIT. Me I am going to Rogue Community College for my nursing in Medford and Grants Pass, atleast I will be when I have my pre reqs done and I am accepted. I have heard, hear say though, that RCC is one of the best and stricter schools for the ADN program. I am going to work my way up from an LPN due to problems financially, I can't afford the two year tenure right now for an ADN. However, I was wondering if anybody else has heard this about RCC? I would really like to know. I appreciate any feedback.

OHSU...is Oregon Health and Science University (Hospital) in Portland the hospital is up on the hill with Doernbecher's and the Veteran's hospital. http://www.ohsu.edu/
There are like 7 or 8 public universities here...not including the private ones like Willamette and George Fox universities etc
OSU, SOU, OIT, WOU, EOU, PSU, OHSU and U of O
I've not heard of RCC, but I'm up in the Willamette Valley and not the Rogue Valley...here are the Oregon nursing school pass rates... http://www.oregon.gov/OSBN/pdfs/passrates.pdf (now keep in mind it doesn't let you know how many students started out in the programs...only the percentage that passed on the first try of those who made it to the boards). I've heard that the school I'm at is one of the best and strict ADN programs as well...I guess we've got good taste, and our schools pass rates show that as well. I'll be sure to pass on any info I get about Rogue, and Good luck in your journey!

RCC is Rogue Commumity College, it is located in Southern Oregon (Medford). I know lots of people that have graduated from there and have done/are doing quite well...actually, I am precepting a student from there right now...I personally did not go through their program but the RNs that have seem to do ok and are happy with their education. OHSU, as the previous poster mentioned, is Oregon Health and Science University. They have satellite campuses at Southern Oregon University (Ashland), OIT (Klammath Falls), and Eastern Oregon (La Grande). The main campus and hospital is located in Portland. It sounds like you are in the area but if you have any questions, feel free to ask...
Most of the pre-nursing people I know who have a BS degree try to get into the Accelerated BSN programs which are 14months long (I think) instead of 24months.
OHSU's program is rated in the top 10 in the country. U of P offers a tuition payment program though Providence Hospitals, Linfield is good because you get more one-on-one with your instructors. There is a brand new BSN program at Concordia that just started this summer. :) Walla Walla has a Portland campus nursing program too.

There are tons of jobs in Portland, but I don't recognize either name from CCC. :)
