Nursing school and work.

So i got into the nursing program at the university of Hawaii and i start this fall. I've been working at the same part time job since the last semester in high school, and my pay there is pretty good for just a part time job. So basically, i've been supporting myself since high school. I paid my own bill, bought my own gas, food, clothes, whatever. Of course I got help from my parents for school, and they will continue helping me with my financial needs for school. I really want to continue to work, so i can pay for the little things. I'd hate to always ask mom and dad for money during the semester because i have no gas, or because im hungry and such, better yet, id hate to see them pay my bills!

So what I wanna know are your experiences with SCHOOL AND WORK. What I heard so far is "dont do it."

Oh and i forgot to add in that my job uses a set schedule that never changes unless you want it to change. They are VERY flexable and i'll probably work weekends only, depending on my class schedule. Thanks.

I know a woman that works full time and has two kids under the age of 5, and she is going into her final year of an LPN program.

I think if you organize your time and set priorities, you can still work and be successful in nursing school.

Find out your timetable and schedule your work around your classes. You'll be able to tell right away if you need to cut back on work hours

Good luck!

Congratulations on starting nursing school! I worked a min of 30 hours a week through LPN and RN school and did great. Many of my friends did also. You do have to be motivated and not put things off but it sounds as if you are used to being responsible so I bet you do just fine. Best to you. Jules

I work the weekends and go to school during the week. There is a little more stress involved, but it is VERY doable. Don't let anyone tell you what you can or can't do. If you have proper motivation, you can do anything! Congratulations on getting accepted into nursing school.

Hawaii. I'm jealous. At least you won't have to scrape off twelve inches of snow to get to morning clinical in January! :-)

Congrats on getting into nursing school. I just finished my first semester and I worked full time, I had 13 hours which seemed heavy but was very doable. I go to class Mon - Thurs and work 12 hour shifts every Thurs, Fri, Sat.

It can be done, its all in how bad you want this. Good luck!! :)

P.S. If I can do this anyone can. I require an ENORMOUS amount of sleep, but for some reason when I got that acceptance letter I knew it would have to buckle down and make sacrifices. Pm me if you have any questions.

Ask yourself this? You have a big test on Monday. You have been busy through the week doing clinicals, writing a paper..... When are you going to study for that test??

I'm working but dang, I wish I wasn't. It would make things so much better.

I cannot afford to not work. I have been working fulltime and going to nursing school. I have been doing so well, even my instructor asked me, how do I do it. I told her, I dont know, only God can tell you. I am so determine to be an RN, I set myself up to succeed. My only option is passing. I think the key to success is prioritizing everything you do. There were times, when I did not call anyone for a while. As soon as the semester ended, I start calling folks that called me in February lol.

I cannot afford to not work.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I have a big mortgage that I can't put on hold. But I'm the same way. I work, spend time with my husband and kids and I study. Nothing else. No social events. No nothing. There isn't room for anything else.

:yeah: congratulations on your acceptance !!

i also work ft mon-fri and go to school nights/weekends as do some of my classmates. you can do it. like others have said: other parts of your life get minimized or totally put on hold (all parts other than school and work!).

its worth the sacrifice. good luck and enjoy it.

I have two children ages 8 and 20 months and I worked full time through out my entire 4 semesters. When I started my daughter was 6 and I worked the 3-11 shift at a local hospital. I would get out of clinical and head straight to work. As long as I was there by 4:30, my boss was pretty lenient with me. When I got into my final semester I was working the weekend shift working 16 hour shifts, which I am continuing now until I start my internship. You really need a support from family, which it sounds like you have, to be able to work and go to nursing school and keep your sanity. I even had a baby during nursing school and I made it. You just have to know what you want and never let anything get in the way. You just learn how to prioritize and get the job done. Good luck to you.

Most everybody I know in my ADN program works. Many of the single-girls work full-time. I probably work the fewest hours of anyone, and I was working about 20 - 24 hours a week. I say was because I am changing jobs where I will be working 36 hrs every F-Sa-Su, during the summer, and then back to 24 during the school year. My house is dirty, and I don't do much in the way of socializing. Having a study session over lunch is about as close as I come to going out with friends. :nuke:

My husband and kids miss me... but we all feel the rewards will be worth it in the end.

Good luck to you!
