Nursing school weight gain

Published

I'm taking a short study break and wanted to ask about weight help!!

My school has a buffet..it's so good. That combined with no cardio exercise anymore and sitting a whole lot more, I gained almost 15 lbs since July!:bag: I was impressed my clinical uniform still fit me since I'd gotten it in August. My other clothes don't fit as well. I'm at my heaviest weight. My BMI is 22.8 right now, which is normal still but I'm not in shape.

When I used to jog every day I could eat whatever I wanted. I don't have time to jog anymore, and even though I walk a lot at work I also sit a lot. I still walk my dogs for 1 hour a day.

Any advice? What do you guys do to keep the weight down when you need to sit for a long time?

What do you eat for a snack to fill you up and stay at a good weight?

I get hungry a lot! I stopped snacking though. So I only eat breakfast, lunch and dinner now. No night snack. I choose the wrong foods though and need some ideas please! Also do you do any quick exercise routine that works? Like a 20 minute work out routine? Thanks.

i stopped with the excess.sugar for the most part, but i do allow myself my daily cup of coffee with a few pumps of white mocha :)

when i eat out..i have them bag half my portion before they serve it as well.

After today I realized I have to do a whole reevaluation of how I study or something. Because I worked last night so I didn't start studying until 2pm. I sat there until 8pm (got up to let dogs out at 5) then I pigged out (:bag:) and took the dogs out for an hour at night that finally made me feel better to be moving. I don't like this...but I didn't want to get up until I finished outlining 2 chapters and they were longies!

Water by the truckloads. It may seem counterintuitive since we are going into professions that are known for having you hold your pee on occasion for 12+ hours but, sometimes, when you're hungry, you're probably just dehydrated. Also, you will get used to the increased intake and you will find you won't end up having to pee as much as expected. Right now, at work, I need probably 3L because I'm sweating so much.

First and foremost you have to take care of yourself FIRST. School is stressful and a lot of work but what good will you be taking care of others if you let your health suffer for it.

For me to stay in shape I go to the gym at least 5x a week. I do get up at 5:45am to do this. I'm in the gym by 6:30am, I work out until 8:00am, then i shower, change into my scrubs and in class by 8:30. On clinical days I do not work out at all

Tips:

If you are having long study sessions it is imperative that you get up and move at least once a hour. If you can't remember to do this set an alarm on your computer and phone to remind you to do this. Once the alarm goes off get up and move around, do some jumping jacks, or jump rope for about about 5 minutes then get back to your study session.

Stay away from processed sugar especially in drinks (soda, juice, etc...) Drink water for the most part. Keep snacking to a minimum.

Healthy snacks to to indulge in would be yogurts, greek yogurt, fruits, veggies, nuts (especially almonds), kale chips.

Try to stay away from the buffet at school and pack your lunch. Try to meal prep on Sundays for the week have a protein such as chicken and fish, whole grains like whole grain rice or pasta, sweet potato, and a veggie

There are some apps you can download that can give you some good workout ideas at home and most often you don't need any equipment to do them. Skimble workout trainer is a pretty good app.

Last but not least, if you can squeeze it in your budget get a device that keeps track of your activity like a fitbit, jawbone, or mio. They are good at keeping track of your steps and calories and some even keep track of your heartrate. They are a good resource to let you know when you are not getting enough activity so you can make adjustments in your daily routine.

This is just what I needed to hear, thank you. I'm going to follow all of this advice. My school has a free gym for students, I'm going to check out what time it opens. Even if it's 8am, my classes don't start until 9 except on clinical/lab days.

Because I really do feel the effects of eating a lot more and not moving much since summer. Walking up stairs, walking through snow, changing linen, and other normal activities leave me breathing hard and just sitting down for hours is mentally not good! I also wasn't drinking water or anything except when I have meals.

The lunch will be hard because we aren't allowed to enter the buffet unless we pay and my friends in nursing all go there and sit and talk and sometimes review for a quiz. Maybe I could find something healthy. They make omelets at your request ..or um. Yeah there's not much healthy. I'll have to figure something out there. I'm afraid to lose friends, we don't hang out outside of school.

I believe that we gain a lot of benefits by developing friendships during school. I value my classmates and we pretty much all support eachother.

I wonder if you could approach your group of friends and tell them you are on a diet or on a budget and can't really afford to eat/study in the buffet area.

In my experiences in school, I'd expect at least a few of your classmates to agree with you and maybe they will be willing to meet somewhere else to study.

Many nursing students are either on a strict budget or into healthful eating.

And in my experiences, there was usually a friend who'd offer to buy lunch on occasion for the people who couldn't afford it. Don't ask anyone to cover you, but you'd be surprised at the offers you might receive.

Try to approach the issue tactfully and politely.

Thanks, I'll try that vintagemother!

I did much better today..drank my lemon water, got up and moved, still studied, went on a 2 hour dog walk..think I will use my 5 lb weights while I sit at my desk too!
