Nursing school refusing to send out NCLEX application

Hello I attend a nursing school is California. I am planning on not attending graduation due to several reasons. My family lives 5 hours away and is financially unable to make it to my graduation. I don't want to walk the line without my family present. Not even to mention the fact that everyone else will have tons of family there. I notified the school that i would not be attending. The nursing director told my instructor that if I did not participate in graduating she would hold my NCLEX application papers and not send them off in a timely matter, so I couldn't sit for my boards soon. Her rational was that its not professional not to show up and that I needed to show up so she could pin me and give her" blessing" for me to move on and practice nursing. Is this legal? Can she hold my papers?

This is not legal...You should seek a legal counselor for this. It would be in poor taste for her to hold your application, unless, you owe the school money.

I don't know about the legality of it, but at the university where I earned my first degree you were required to attend graduation or your weren't allowed to graduate. You could only be excused for a documented emergency and the university decided what qualified as "emergencies".

I did my undergrad at a large university - the only people who would have noticed that I didn't walk were a few of my friends (though, to be fair, my undergraduate degree is not in nursing). If this is only a nursing school, then you may be SOL. If your nursing school is part of a larger institution, and if you have documentation of this in the form of email or the like, I heavily suggest you follow this up the chain to the appropriate academic office (Provost/Chancellor/Whatever). This kind of petty BS happens, and is part of nurses eating their young, but it really shouldn't be tolerated if you can get someone to support you from on high.

Sounds to me like you offend the Dean, technically I want to say “no” she/he can’t do that and reminder her that’s it’s pining ceremony and that it is not a diplomat/your degree ceremony, which will be handed out to you by the school once you completed all you GE/Associated Science Degree in Nursing courses, you can actually get that mailed to you too, if you don’t want to attend that, either…(that's what I did, just had my school mail it to me, it took 6 months for my degree to get to me but hey I got it). But in any case would it hurt to just get pin, clapp and then hurry up and slip out the back door, when it's all done and over with? Good luck!! Congrats, you made it through Nursing School!!!
