Nursing School Question

Published

Hi all,

I have decided to go back to school for nursing after already having a bachelor's in another field. My ultimate goal is to become a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist), so I need to get experience in critical care after I finish a nursing program.

Does anyone know how easy it is to get a critical care nursing position as a fresh BSN graduate? Also, since I haven't started applying to programs yet, does anyone know if there are critical care specific BSN programs which would make getting a critical care job right out of school more realistic?

Thank you!!!

No there are no BSN programs that specialize.

No specific critical care BSN programs. Just nursing school!!! Critical care positions really depends on your area. Some areas hire new grads in critical care areas, some don't. Some areas are saturated with new grads and it's really hard for them to get jobs, especially in Acute care. You may be able to find a new grad residency program in some of the hospitals in your area. Just do some research. Good luck on your journey

This depends on the nursing employment market in the geographic area where you live. In general, the chances of securing a critical care job as a new grad are excellent in places where people aren't exactly flocking to live (e.g. North Dakota, rural eastern Kentucky, western Tennessee, southern Georgia, south Texas, eastern Oklahoma, many parts of Kansas, etc.).

I concur. Nursing education in the U.S. trains you to be a generalist. You cannot train to become a critical care nurse, or a postpartum nurse, or a psychiatric nurse in U.S. nursing schools.

You generalize in nursing school. You specialize on the job.

Wow thank you all for the quick responses! Appreciate you all!
