Hi!

I am just wondering if you have to do very many presentatons in nursing school. If so are they group presentations or just you by yourself? I am extrememly shy about getting up in front of a group of people to give presentations.

Presentations? No, we normally just sit and listen to lectures. I wish we did have presentations! It would be a great way to learn things...not to mention great for my grades!

We have done several - usually health teaching projects for a specific audience. One was for a group of LTC residents - we covered various health topics where their own self-care could enhance their health. Another was for a small group of pregnant young women at a crisis pregnancy center - each of us covered a topic r/t pregnancy, L&D or post-partum care.

We have also done informal reviews of journal articles for the staff RNs of the unit wherever we're currently having clinicals.

not really. on our OB rotation we had to make up a short teaching presentation and present it to our fellow students only. no grade for it. then this year, we had to do a big pediatric teaching project. find some kids out there (we had to find them on our own, lol) and teach them something about health/safety. had to do a teaching plan, in detail, evaluations, what did you learn, etc etc etc. i taught my 4 year old son's class about strangers :) no grade for that either. you do it, you do it well-good. you don't do it-you fail nursing.

but group presentations? hardly at all

Yes, I have one on Tuesday. It's a group project, and I have one more group project in the works for a different class. :angryfire Sorry, I don't like group projects or presentations...especially when they're combined.

We have them fairly often - sometimes group projects, sometimes solo. A week or so ago, our group had to do a teaching presentation on parenteral nutrition. After Thanksgiving, we'll be doing one on diabetes. Our next big solo presentation is a nutritional assessment/critique on one of our patients.

I assume they are just a part of nursing school curriculum. We've had 2 so far this semester. You just have to get used to them. I have severe anxiety, and an extreme fear of getting up in front of people to talk...so you know what I do? I volunteer to go first Always. If I can't get up there first I try my hardest to get in 2nd or 3rd. #1 No one is listening to you. Why? Because they are going over their presentations in their head and looking over their notes. #2 You will be so relieved, and you will be able to sit back and enjoy the rest of your fellow classmate's presentations. You gotta get used to it....you will be teaching ppl for the rest of your career...that just doesn't mean 1 person (your patient)...but perhaps a room full of family members? You never know. It's all in learning. Just relax and enjoy it....group presentations are alot better than flying solo.

Don't wait so long to go up there....you will "think" yourself into a little tizzy.:p
