nursing school AND work full time possible?

I just signed up for my pre reqs for nursing school at a university that offers an RN program during the weekend and evenings. This is a second career for me, so I figured I could work the job I have while completing the RN program. I have talked to a couple people who have told me tales of people they know who went to nursing school and were so overwhelmed with studying that they were unable to work. This isn't really possible for me to do since i'm on my own and this is a second career. Is it possible to complete an RN program and work full time? Has anyone done it?

Thanks!

I work full time - nights. I'm married with two kids still under the age of 18. I started my pre-reqs part time about 3 years ago. I now only have the nursing portion of my RN left to do. The one nursing class each semester equates to about 3/4 of a full load. It is doable if you really want it. You can do it. Remember it isn't forever.

BTW I know many CNAs that went to LPN school full time and they all made it. I also know many LPNs that went to RN school like I am and they all made it.

I personally can't do it, but it's been done before. Good luck!

I was working part time when attmpting it, but decided to focus more on college so I left work. Right now I am in my Master's program and am not working because I have to take care of my disabled husband (that is a full time job alone). I do plan to work part time, as to when for sure I do not know.

My personal suggestion, if you do not have to work, don't, if you can at least go to part time do that. Nursing is a tough program and not for the faint of heart. Others have done it (worked and went through the program), but the ones I have talked to said if they hadn't of had to work, they would have just went to college and not worked.

I work full time evenings 4pm to midnite and i go to school full time too. I am am in my 2nd semester of nursing. It is hard and i have no social life anymore but its definately do-able.

I was working FT while completing my pre-reqs. I got laid off so being unemployed is not a choice for me....however, there may be a job opening in mid-March that I may take. It is my intention to continue working for as long as I can.

Being able to do this depends on your ability to multi-task and prioritize....and how well you process what you learn in class. So people just naturally learn more easily than others....for them, working FT shouldn't be a problem...

Some folks need to study hours and hours....this is someone that may need to reconsider working while going to NS.

It is all about your abilities! Good luck with NS! I hope you do well and the decision you make is right for you!
