Nursing process

hi guys,

im new to this nursing forums and i am worried about acceptance to the nursing in kingsborough and hope some feedback about my topic will help. i will be taking the nln exam this coming january and also the sci 25 class in fall semester. the previous schools i attended was csi and hunter. i am worried that my old transcripts will affect the decision to nursing program :scrying:. currently i have a 3.9 gpa as a transfer in kbcc and a c in the eng 12 course. in csi and hunter my gpa was really bad about 2.4 average. every other course i have an a and waiting on the sci 25 course which i will definitely try hard to receive an a in. anyone experienced know what i should do? or what to expect ? or any other alternatives i should start looking into just incase. also when applying to the nursing program do that take it against me from my csi and hunter grades for their decision? feedback would be greatly appreciated! thank you so much!! copy%20of%20wink.gif

I posted this in another thread, but for your benefit.....it depends on the school you are applying to.

In 1979 @17 yrs of age, I started my BE-EE @ Manhattan College. Not knowing any better, I studied EE because my father wouldn't "let" me study anything else! (A different time back then.) Anyway, I didn't do well because I was not interested in the material. Our school was extremely challenging and all courses had to be bell-curved so that an equal percentage of students got As, Bs....all the way to F. I remember one Mech Eng student who scored a 95 on a test in a required course and got a D!!!:banghead: Anyway, our motto was 2-O (ie:2.0) and GO! :D

My pre-req GPA is 3.75. My overall GPA (yes they transferred a heck of a lot of my 1979 -84 courses) is currently a 2.6. In some schools, I would be excluded because my overall GPA is not 3.0 and above. However, the school I am applying to for nursing does it based on a point system. As a result, my old grades will not haunt me.

Check out the schools you are applying to. The information should be on their site. If not call an advisor and get the information.

Good Luck!

I also have a low GPA due to prior coursework. When I graduated with my Mech Engineering degree, I was just squeeking by - as I too had little interest in the BS-ME - and ended up with something like a 2.4 cumulative GPA. Now, after 5 yrs of prereq rework, I've brought that up to a 2.8. Gads --- it takes A LOT of work to raise a GPA when you have almost 200 hrs!

I just attended the IRSC ADN info session last week and was thrilled to hear that they too use a point system that focuses on the grades you have on your PREREQUISITES! Cool:yeah: I have managed to get all A's since returning to school --- some 20 yrs later!!!

Definitely check out how admission to the program works for the school you're interested in. I encountered two different situations where I live. the local university's second degree program required a minimum 2.5 GPA from your first degree, and relied heavily on that to determine who was admitted. The local CC, which I chose instead, only evaluates the grades of the required pre-req. classes and the fact that you completed the degree. They only allow transfer of classes with grade 2.0 or better, but they do not hold the first degree against you, just celebrate that you completed it. My first B.A. was a GPA of 2.8 - I realized half way in that I hated my program, hated the instructors, hated my fellow students (very opinionated, self-righteous bunch), but chose to struggle through and at least finish the degree. It's main value to me is that it entitles me to apply for the accelerated 2nd degree program for nursing instead of having to go the traditional route.

Hi to all of you, I don't mean to hijack this thread but I couldn't find a way to post my question. I hope you guys don't mind if I ask my question through this thread.

I am a stay home mom of 10 months old. I do have a BS Community Development that I acquired in the Philippines. And I have contemplated over and over again that I wanted to pursue BS in Nursing as my second degree and it's a career path that I would like to take. I also have worked in a nursing home as a CNA in state of Wa.Now, we had moved here in TX. We just have one car that my husband used to work and am not quite mobile as I don't drive yet.But with our current situation, I don't wanna be stopped from pursing this goal as I believe it will help us a lot to secure our family's future.

Are there any members here who are pursuing a second degree in nursing who acquired their degree in another country? What were you chances and what do you think mine would be? I know it might sound ridicolous but I just wanna understand it better. I just hope it could save me time not to redo subjects that I had taken before like Pschology, Sociology, Algebra and others. Is there anybody out here who are on the same boat as me or who knows somebody? I am thinking of taking most of the pre-reqs online as I am watching my daughter at home.

I would really be happy to meet some support group here if it is possible. Thanks a lot guys.I appreciate your time.

Hi Madel,

One of my friends had the same situation like your. She actually got the credit for some courses such as microbiology and sociology, but not all. She talked to the counsular as well as the dean. You can ask to the college administration where you want to study. Perhaps you dont have to repeat it. By the way this was in a community college of California.

Good Luck!

thanks for your quick response Himalayan! Are you from the P.I.,too?just wondering, thanks again.

No, i am from Nepal.

Hello:

Yes it's possible that your credits from the Philippines will transfer over. What you should do is talk to an admissions counselor at a school that you're interested in attending and get them to evaluate your transcript. They will let you know what they will give you credit for. The most affordable place to take prereq classes is community college. You can also get an admissions counselor at the cc to evaluate your transcript if you don't have other nursing programs in mind right now. If your cc has a nursing program you might be interested in getting your Associate's in Nursing there. And/or since you already have a BS you could look at BS to BSN or BS to MSN programs - with your undergrad in community development it sounds like you would have a good foundation for a MSN. Either way it usually starts with the prereqs. Once you're enrolled in cc you can start looking at nursing programs that interest you and make note of their prereqs so that you know what classes to take.
