New back-to-school worry: Unvaccinated classmates

Nurses Headlines

"A growing number of children aren't getting required vaccinations for non-medical reasons. What will this new reality bring this school year?

As parents send their children back to school, some are grappling with a new worry: whether their children's classmates have received all their vaccinations.

An outbreak of measles in Texas this week shows why their concern is not without reason. Twenty-one people linked to a megachurch and its congregation have contracted the highly contagious disease, and the case has put a spotlight on falling vaccination rates in the U.S.

Measles was eradicated in the U.S. as of 2000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but outbreaks like the one in Texas are increasing, as is the percentage of parents choosing not to immunize their children, which has seen an uptick in recent years. Usually, the CDC expects to see 60 cases of measles per year, but there have been 135 cases of measles so far in 2013, and in 2011, more than 220 people were diagnosed with the disease.

This latest outbreak follows a rash of recent measles cases among New York's Orthodox Jewish population and an outbreak in San Diego in 2008."

I'm looking for truth. The need for vaccines. It's hard to just believe whatever is told to us because life seems to be all about money and greed. I know a lot of vaccine injured children so it's hard to look at this without being on the "conspiracy theorist" side of the fence. I don't trust the gov't or big pharma. I don't.

You have never provided any proof of a vaccine injured child. You have suspicions that a vaccine caused an injury but that is not proof. As someone has already stated it is extremely disrespectful to assume that as healthcare workers we would be ignorant enough or complacent enough to cause harm to our patients which is what every anti-vaccine conspiracist is suggesting.

I could not do more to convince you that vaccines are safe than I already have. A simple pre-vaccine history or historical anthropology class should be enough to convince anyone of the need for vaccines.

I don't know how I can provide proof without providing too much info about the people I know. One child I know died right after the Hep B shot, another developed autism, I've looked at the VAERS website. It's not the healthcare worker that's corrupt. It's the million/billion dollar industry we work for. Nothing has been said here will convince me to fully vaccinate my children. All it's done is make me feel less guilty, and a little more glad, about the few vaccines I've chosen to give them based on our current situation.

My mother is a teacher of Autistic children and the myth that vaccines cause it are a joke. Example: She has one family that has three children... The 1st was vaccinated and has autism, the 2nd was not vaccinated and does not. They did not vaccinate the 3rd however he has autism as well. She has multiple families like this. Autism happens to be diagnosed or becomes known at the same as some vaccines are given which is why people have mistakenly linked the two.

You really sound like you believe in conspiracy theories and no matter how many facts we present you with, you will remain steadfast in your beliefs. Please don't pass your beliefs onto your patients.

I didn't know admitting that the world is money hungry and greedy means I believe in conspiracy theories. I used to. Fully. But I'm moving away from it. Some of the things they say are rediculous. They claim that normal people are fear mongered by the media, but I've never seen more fear mongering then that that comes from the actual conspiracy theorists. My husband is the biggest one I know and it drives me NUTS.

Coincidence is not causation. The only way to prove a vaccine was a cause of death would be through an autopsy. Vaccines do not cause autism, but there are a lot of people making money off of that myth.

Maybe nursing isn't the right choice for you. Chiropractors and naturopaths are well known to hold the same beliefs as you maybe that would be a better career choice. Nursing and medicine rely on EBP and if you have a firm disbelief in all EBP that does not agree with your opinions then nursing would be a poor career choice IMHO.

Believing that our society is capitalistic is not wrong, but why then would socialist and communist countries believe in using vaccines then? Are you saying that they have been bought off too for the last 50-60+yrs?

Eh, I think you all are misunderstanding how I feel about the topic. I am posting all these to learn a different aspect and I'm very receptive to all of what you say. I'm going to be more of a lactation consultant than a nurse so I guess you'll get your wish.

Okay, but let's say that you become a lactation consultant and you teach the same way for 20 years, and suddenly a new meta-analysis comes out that states you have not been teaching the best way all this time. Hypothetically this goes against your personal beliefs. Do you decide not to change or do follow the current EBP?

The point being is when and how do you decide to follow EBP, if it is only when you agree with it then you are doing yourself and your patients a disservice.

There is a favorite quote of mine that I apply to how I parent. "We do then what we knew how to do, when we know better we do better" I am ALL FOR Evidence based practices. Honestly, being the birth junky I am I'm totally for it. Yes I question vaccines. Why shouldn't I? I question a lot of things. It's already been beaten into my head here on this forum that I'm not supposed to push my belief (and I don't) onto others when I become a nurse, and trust me I won't. I'm a firm believer in informed consent and as long as the patient knows what they are doing then that's all that matters to me.

I think if you learn to really read and interpret peer-reviewed scientific literature you will come to trust it more. In my doctoral program I was able to find and recognize two articles with discrepancies. One article had used a statistical correction in what I believe was in error (which other more recent articles have led me to believe I am correct in my assumption), and another article had used a technique that made the results next to useless. I wouldn't have been able to determine the error in either one of those things without my advanced education, clinical expertise, and research of my own. Some of these problems can be eliminated from the beginning by looking at meta-anlysis and systematic reviews which I try to provide when I add references. http://jeffline.tju.edu/Ask/Help/Handouts/evidence_pyramid.pdf

CNN this morning has yet another article on measles.

"Among those who have been stricken with measles this year, 92% were not vaccinated or had unknown vaccination status."
