Hi! I'm a BScN RN with almost 6 yrs of clinical experience. Besides that, computers are my hobby, being around them for almost 15 yrs. Currently I do have a computer business where I use my self-taught skills to troubleshoot (hardware/software) and build new systems.
I've been trying to get more information on how to enter this field of Nursing but everybody tends to be extremely secretive. I emailed our Nursing Informatics Association...my hospital's IT department...no one wants to help me out. It feels like the dark side of Nursing lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if you are interested in pursuing a degree in this specialty. There are a few online programs from accredited universities such as Walden University. Not sure how much computer charting and other applications are being used in nursing where you work. Best of luck to you,

Greetings silentmomolith,
As far as I know this specialty is no secret.
Different clinicians have entered the specialty via different routes - some of their stories are posted on this Forum.
Perhaps your IT dept staff are up to their ear lobes in work and unable to get back to you.
Here is the website of the President of the Canadian Nursing Informatics Assn - June Kaminski
http://nursing-informatics.com/
You may have better luck contacting her directly. If you still have trouble e-mail or PM me directly.
Have you thought of joining the Canadian NI association or attending one of their educational events or meetings and networking to learn more about this specialty?
Additionally a wealth of information about this specialty can be found by reading the posts on this forum, via other on-line sources/Internet searching and via numerous texts.
Good Luck!

I live in the US and have nine and a half years in healthcare IT. To get into the field in TO you need to know someone. Witness the recent debacle with the ON agency dealing with the EMR. I knew there was something wrong, when I sent them my resume, heard back from them, but no further correspondence.
American hospitals are scrambling to get good people. My advice, if you really want to get into the field, is to move south.
I am wondering how bad I want to relocate home to Canada. How much do I want to work in Informatics?
