Am I the only one having a difficult time trying to work as a nurse. I graduated back in May 2005 and the issue has always been child care. This profession is not very child friendly, especially if you have young ones in school. Has anyone else had these problems? I have 5 kids ranging from 9yrs -2yrs. I am curently working per diem but would like to work more. The hospitals only offer 12hour shifts here 7-7 and I do work both shifts am/pm when I can. Any suggestions? I am thinking of changing careers.

There are areas of the hospital that have more family friendly hours than 7-7, dialysis, day surgery, radiology. Look at the other units and see what they offer.

For me,DH works mon-fri so i have to work nights weekend by Gods grace.I think you really have to find a way to work and still keep your family going. The thing is that you need to find something that'll suits you with your family. In as much as your family is first, you need to like-wise ,work in order to support them financially.

I am still in school and my husband is a truckdriver now. I have no family and I have the same concerns. Let me know of any ideas you come up with!!!

If you can find someone to sit with the kiddos at night, I recommend working 7p-7a three days a week. The nurses I work with are home in the am to take the kids to school, sleep while they are there (and the babies are in mother's day out) and then get up and pick them up from school, cook dinner, help with homework and then go to work. It is not ideal, but it works for many. Hope that this helps somewhat. I plan to stay on nights and work part time weekends once we have our baby. Working Friday and Saturday nights, that way my hubby is home with baby during the weekends and I am off during the week. Best wishes.
