Can anyone help me figure out a nursing diagnosis and the related factors for this particular disorder: "rhabdomyolysis." I can't find it anywhere, not even my med-surg book. THANKS, KAL

"rhabdomyolysis" is the disintegration of striated muscle fibers with excretion of myoglobin in the urine.

"myoglobin" is the oxygen-transporting pigment of muscle, a conjugated protein resembling a single subunit of hemoglobin, being composed of one globin polypeptide chain and one heme group.

Hope that's a start for you.

I know the etiology.......I'm trying to make a care plan....I need to add some nursing diagnosis: ie., Knowledge Deficent R/T ......I don't know (something from NANDA???). Risk for infection R/T???

I don't think we do students a favor by giving them the answers. What with the internet, it's simple to just Google, go to MedLine, etc.

And before someone chimes in that this is "nurses eating their young," please...many of us managed to get through school the old fashioned way; we went to the library and looked the stuff up.

There is not usually a deficit in knowledge for the patient, they are usually unconscious. Very, very rarely do you see this in someone who is muscle building or working out for a weight lifting contest. Usually it is found in someone who has been found down at home. This would pertain to the family, but not the patient.

Make sure that you pay attention to nutrition. Remember that this is caused by a breakdown of the muscles from no food being eaten, in the simplest of terms. Dehydration is also a big factor. Excretion of toxins from the system, as the kidneys can also be affected.

Hope that this gives you a start..............

This is where you are supposed to start developing your critical thinking skills. How would the breakdown of muscle fibers affect the body/organ systems? Think it through; you should be able to come up with one or two problems.

I hate writing care plans :crying2: What about Risk for Impaired Tissue Perfusion? I am not familiar with that disorder--yet. I still have one more semester to go. Hope that helps. BTW, do not buy a nursing care plan book by Swearingen. Her book is aweful. Not many psychosocial nsg dx.

Your right about giving students the answers however, it was around 11pm when I needed some advise. It's after 1 am here...I have clinicals in about 6 hours.....I have like 3 books open at once...not finding enough info in them.....My computer is always on when doing my homework, that way, I can get quick info if I can't get it in the books.

I know about rhabdomyolysis and how it effects the kidneys to the cellular level. My client I'm assigned to has it. He's in his early 20's, got drunk and passed out.....sleeping with no heat....woke up almost in the afternoon the next day (Winter) and it was still cold. dx: Acute renal & rhabdomyolysis. He's been on dialysis since March 20 something....and still today.

I just needed 3 Nursing Dx.....But, it's okay I already have it.
