your nursing career dream

Published

if you the time, the skills, the resources and no limitations, is there a dream nursing position that you would like to hold? what is your all time nursing job? and if you are not in your dream nursing position, why not?

My whole life I have had two dreams. One was to be a nurse and the second was to do mission work. Since the nursing dream is slowly coming true, i will work on my next dream. So my dream job as a nurse would be to do mission/volunteer work as a nurse. My husband and I have talked a lot about doing this when we retire. But I really would like to do this sooner and I know their are companies that help you to take "meaningful vacations" and use your skills/profession in placing you in mission work. Maybe I can do that in a few years.

I am an ICU nurse form Canada. In the short term, I dream about passing the NCLEX, long term: be a NP

I'd be Brad Pitt's personal nurse !

LOL! :yeahthat:

I currently work ft in an SICU and teach BSN program clinicals 2 days a week. My dream nursing job would be to get some one to pay for me to go back and finish my doctorate (a stipend too to survive!), then retire from my current job and begin writing ft for AACN.

To get through nursing school unscathed, achieve my RN license (and someday, my NP license), and work in PICU or the NNICU.

I might change my mind on what field, but my dream is to become a nurse. I've dreamt about this for so long, it's so surreal that it's finally happening. I know more and more everyday that this is what I'm meant to be doing. It makes me want to cry thinking about it.:heartbeat

I honestly still have no idea -- which is partly why I jumped from medicine to nursing. I LOVE the idea of being able to continue to jump around in my profession -- for the rest of my career, if I so desire (and employers are willing to handle that I may not be around forever).

I'm currently on a medical floor, one at which I'm not entirely happy. I am content, though, esp. since I'm a new grad, have great co-workers, decent ratios, great benefits, and work at a good hospital. I dislike dealing with sooo many nursing home patients (I might as well have gone to work for an LTC!) with VRE or MRSA, but they're not THAT numerous and are usually tolerable.

My 1 year contract is up in March. After then, I earn my 1st stripe for making it through 1 year (& 2 months -- my contract officially began after my 8 weeks of orientation) as a registered nurse -- and surviving it!

I'm waiting for a little more experience and time to determine what I'll do after that.

I do want to go back to school (for a myriad of degrees, including 1 or more in biology, though I can't completely push nursing aside), but that will wait until my husband has finished his schooling. (At present, I have to BS degrees and he has 0, so we're letting him have his fair share. Also, he's not quite as interested in going to school FOR-EV-ER, as I am.)

Well, my nursing 'dream' only began about a year ago. My grandmother died in December '06. She died at home, with her family around. We had hospice workers come in during her last week or so (she had Alzheimer's and eventually stopped eating/getting out of bed). The hospice nurses were very helpful. They were careful and gave some instructions/advice for my family to take care of my grandmother's last days. A few months after she died, I reflected on how much they had helped make such a sorrowful period peaceful.

So, last year, I decided that I wanted to help other families in their times of need. So, I decided to finish the prerequisites for nursing school (including retaking some courses that were 5+ years old), bring my GPA up, and get into an Accelerated BSN program. I was accepted for Spring of '09. So, in 1.5 years, I expect to embark on that journey. I am also thinking of those "meaningful vacations" that lklin09 mentioned. Maybe I'd like to be able to be in a response team for international disasters.

Is anyone else in home hospice care? Is that a career I could begin immediately upon graduation? What about an international response team?

Hi,

I hope you recieve this message. You sent me a private message, but apparently I cannot send one. So I thought I would respond to a thread you started. Although this one is from last year, so hopefully you still check. you asked about my nursing career and if I like it etc. I LOVE nursing! I have been able to work different places, had to move a lot with my husband's job. ALways able to find a job. Used to work full time but now work mostly parttime since we have kids. Works great. If I had to do it all over again I would do the same thing. Have my BSN, work med surg mostly. Not sure what you meant about how would I approach a nursing career if had to do it again. I would get a BSN like I did. I would suggest to anyone to work full time in the hospital prefferably med/surg for a year. Then you can go do anything you want. And you should have enough experience that you can handle most general patients ( you know chest pain, hypoglycemia etc) Hope that answers your question!

I am dreaming of being part of a medical team in any country i am applying. be one of the best nurses that was loved by patient.. i wanna give my care and concern to my patient and contribute my skills and knowledge to the medical team i am part with..

I wanna have a continuous growth as an individual and on my career..

Its funny that I see this thread now as I've been thinking about my current status and where I want to go a lot lately. In nursing school I definitely wanted to go on to get my Masters but given the sometimes shaky nurse practioner/CRNA job market and the very little money in being a nursing instructor, Im not sure I'd use it well. I've considered becoming an MD but that would take so long it seems prohibitive. I also wanted to do mission work but that too seems pretty distant considering I have two little ones who I wouldn't subject to the risks. I know one thing, Im lucky in that I like where I work but I don't think Id be satisfied if I was in the same place in 5 years. I need to do something soon. Im rambling but I guess to answer the question, I want to be in a position where I know I've accomplished all I can to get there and in doing so I can provide an avenue to care for the truly sick and needy.

my dream job is to be a midwife and i haven't gotten there yet since i'm still a student but will in about 4 yrs time.
