Can anyone recommend any good books for learning Nirsing Calculations?
I used, math for nurses by Mary no boyer. I loved it. It is pocket sized, and works through each type of problem in multiple ways. Each chapter has lots of sample problems. I found easier ways to do things quickly using this book.
Although many people have posted just basic algebra is what you need. I needed more. I struggle with math and dyslexia with numbers. This book was a great book for me I just needed to see it and understand it at my pace. I would highly recommend it.
LOL funny.
you can actually find nursing formulas on the web. calculating drops / minute using drip factor for example:
Vol to infuse (mL)x drip rate (gtt/mL)
------------------------------------------ = X gtt/min
# hours ( 60 minutes / hr)
Also if you have to convert miligrams to milliliters...
500 mG/10 mL = 250 mg / x mL ------> think right Gopher goes underground...
x mL = 250 mg x 10 ml / 500 mG
Algebra 101.
The only problem I have with students memorizing equations is that they don't always get the rationale for the thing. Then when they get a test questions with a bunch of random numbers thrown in to confuse them, well, it confuses them. The people who write the tests know this, so they put in a few wrong answer choices that would result if you plugged in some of those irrelevant numbers. Alas, when the inevitable occurs and the question is marked wrong, the student shows up in the office loaded for bear showing her calculations, and you have to explain why they are totally missing the boat.
People really need to understand the rationales behind their calculations, and where they should be headed before they embark. That's a real challenge with some folks.

If your school requires ATI, they do have some helpful modules on learning and practicing. Plus there are youtube videos like
