In a tertiary center, What is your patient to nursing assistant ratio on an antepartum/post partum area?

Do they work in your labor and delivery area?

If yes, what is their role in the labor and delivery area?

we have no CNAs. We have techs, but they are for the OR and doing paperwork things. They are NOT used as CNA's, nor are most of them trained as such.

We have one OB Tech (is really a CNA who can scrub) on our unit no matter what the census. Sometimes they ahve two on days but that is because one does a lot of ordering, etc.

Staffed by RN and LPN only. Each have a 5 mum/baby (total 10) each. Each is responsible for assessments, education, and meds.

We do have a unit supply aide, who does no patient care.

L&D is RN only.

Our OB Techs mostly are CNA's but we have one that is actually an LVN. They do the interviewing of patients, get thier vitals, put them on the monitors and dip the urine. Most of them scrub for c/s, and they stock the rooms and do other general stuff. During deliveries some will help push patients and do the post delivery clean up. Then they dispose of the dirty del table.

We use assistive staff (CNAs LVNs) on PP only. Our LVNs virtually function as CNAs and are not considered in nursing staff ratios. Each RN has 4 couplets. The assistive staff only cares for the moms. All baby care is deferred to the RN. On our main floor we have 19 PP rooms and generally 2 assistants split the floor. Our other floor has 12 PP rooms and one assistant is assigned to that floor. Same goes for overflow which has 11 rooms. We put GYNEs on all of these floors. Our L&d and ANTE are RN only.

The assistants are responsible for vitals, linen changes, assisting with ambulation and peri care and water/juice. They also wheel out discharges.
