Nurses struggling with mental illness

Nurses Disabilities

Published

I was just wondering if there are any other nurses who struggle with mental illness. It seems to be one disability that is met with little tolerance and support in the medical field. I do have major co-morbid mental illness, Major depression/PTSD/DID, and have had many problems in my career. I have been in therapy and on meds for a long time and have worked very hard to be functional, and I have suprised myself by what I have been able to achieve. Currently, I am a hospice nurse in a residential setting and it seems that I have found my niche. It doesn't aggravate my illness too much. I am very busy at times and most of my job revolves in much cognitive thinking and decision making about the best ways to respond to a patient's emerging or existing symptoms, and in assessing patients to see where they are in the dying process, plus lots of educating to patients and families. My extensive personal trauma background has made me able to have a different perspective on death and don't see it as the scary thing that is SO SAD, that a lot of people do. Plus, because of the things that I have been through, I am more able to be compassionate and understanding of patients and their fears. I especially do well with patients with existing mental illness or lots of anxiety. I notice that a lot of nurses have little tolerance for a patients anxiety and are not willing to take the extra time to walk them through things and provide the extra reassurance that they need.

Yes, there are some nursing jobs that I don't think I would be able to do because of the fast on the spot life and death action necessary. ER and Trauma/Burn are pretty much out for me. But thats OK. A lot of nurses couldn't handle doing what I do either for their own reasons. We are all suited to certain things.

Having mental illness doesn't automatically make you unsuited for the nursing profession. Even though I have heard many times, "what are you doing here?" "Shouldn't you be doing something else, less stressful?"

I am here and am doing the thing I am suited for. Yes sometimes I have to take time off due to my illness, but its no different than somone who has flare ups of a chronic physical illness like lupus, chronic fatigue, or fibromyalgia.

I would like to know how other nurses have coped with their own illness and their nursing careers.

Thank you both for all of the encouragement. I really need it.

I do have two people who live with me and who know me very well and can detect when I get out of sorts...my husband and my mother. Believe me... they let me know quick and without hesitation. :D :yeah:

Can you please tell me why you do not suggest I work nights? Do you think it may cause me to have more problems with the bipolar.

Your opinions, suggestions, advice, care and concern are very important to me. I look forward to hearing for all of you again.

Thanks!

I am going to leave links to posts I made describing in detail what happened because i am lazy =P

My psych doc explained to me that bipolar disorder is a circadian rhythm disorder anyway which can be exacerbated by working night shift (although everyone's illness is different). I had the worst mood episode that I have ever had in my life. I was rendered unable to work my night shift job and unable to work for a month while I recovered. I had my psych doc sign a note saying that I could not work nights related to medical reasons/disability. Due to ADA, the hospital is legally bound to make 'reasonable accomodations'. I am now working a day shift job and they have been wonderful about not stigmatizing me.

this is my personal experience and my personal psych docs opinion. Definitely talk to your psych and decide what is right for you.

Very cool! didn't know WHAT kind of reasonable accomodations there might be! For me tho the stress of days is more stressful than messing w/ my circadian (altho working days NOT in a nursing field DOES seem to be better for me).

The main thing I have to watch to avoid mania is that I get enough sleep.

The main thing I have to watch to avoid depression is that I don't over do with helping other people, but also that I do not isolate - and sometimes helping others in a LIMITED way can be good for me. Just not to overload myself. It's a balance...

I have been stable for a good long time altho last week was a little rocky because my dad passed away ... still, I am doing well. Thank you God!

My biggest problem is that any info which is brought to the State Nursing Board is published online in the meeting minutes, and searchable from Google. So, if ever it becomes an issue this seems to be infringing upon my personal health care privacy issues. However, I have seen multiple nurses also with MI and also drug dependance and/or pain management issues medications listed and the board determines they need to get a release from treating MD to decide if they are safe to practice. I cannot help but feel violated by the Board. In Indiana the teachers Union protects this info, so you cannot view any actions by the board unless it broke a law and there was a crime commited. As a nurse you can be persecuted for being mentally ill and this is legal? I wish I knew a good pro bono ADA lawyer here. Are other states allowing this info to be released on the net also?

I was just thinking about this today - it dawned on me that if I get my lic. off inactive and apply for a job, what will happen? Will my lic. be denied? I am on social security for my M.I. and I was wondering if anyone would be checking that.

Interesting the teacher's union has that protection!

Doesn't the board recogognize handicapped nurses? I couldn't see discriminating a nurse who is being followed and stable on meds if nec. What do you think?

Miss Sharona is hanging in and hanging on. My dh and I have started a petition for civil committment for our son. Found him 2 weeks ago suicidal, very despondent and looped on Heroin.

What a summer. Could use a prayer or two! Thanks Zoe.:redpinkhe

I'm reading everything I can to understand Heroin addiction, and the Methadone Program. He is ready to go into a dual diagnosis center, but is he ready to do the work? It was very hard finding him "again". Again barely breathing. But alive!!!! We can use all the prayers we can get for a recovery for him. Thanks Zoe:redbeathe

((((((((Sharona )))))))))) my little brother who almost died of alcohol poisoning last summer (has wet brain already which is permanent) came to my dad's funeral totally wasted. So I can sure relate. Watching someone willingly put poison in themselves really hurts.

I am thankful I got to stop when I was in my mid 20's before so much damage could be done... I feel so sympathetic towards him. But mad too - he is destroying someone (himself) that I care about!

(((((((((Sharona and son)))))) definitely praying! Do you also want to put a request on the prayer thread in the breakroom? if you want me to put it in there for you send me a PM!
