LVN probation follow my RN LICENSE?

Nurses Recovery

Published

I'm nearing an end of a 3 year probation with the nursing boards for an alcohol related arrest years ago. I'm an LVN now and my question is, if I were to apply for my RN license (with my probation with the LVN boards being over) will I be able to obtain it, restrictions free? Or will they make me do their probation through the BRN? Can I fight it & would I be able to win if I receive a letter of completion from the BVNPT board? Never failed a drug/etg test & I was compliant throughout the whole 3 years. I would hate to have to go through even more issues & I don't want my RN license to have a public record, like my LVN license.

You are still being licensed by the same board. So when your license is ran both licenses will be linked showing the disciplinary actions, agreement to infarction and completion, unless you have an agreement to complete the program and then it will not be a public record. I wouldn't think you would have to repeat the program but you might want to call your BON.

I thought the BVNPT & the BRN were separate since they both have different names and different addresses?

Yes, in CA they have the boards separated into the "Board of Vocational Nurses and Psychiatric Technicians" and the "Board of Nursing". Apparently we're the only state that doesn't have one board for both LVNs and RNs. Only in CA...

You're not unique. West Virginua has separate boards as well.

West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses

West Virginia RN Board

Wasn't really sure as I've never heard anyone talk about having separate boards who wasn't from CA. I think we should have one nursing board, but that's just me.

oh wow I was not aware of that. possible call and ask??

I was told a violation will forever stay on an lvn license, but if you obtain your rn it won't be attached
