Nurses: How far is your commute?

Published

And what's the length of your shifts? How long of a commute is reasonable for you? What do you think of the coworkers who drive from farther away?

I live 20 minutes away from the hospital and I work 12 hour night shifts. Max for me would be 30-45 minutes away

Specializes in Pediatrics, School Nursing.

I have an amazing job as a certified school nurse, and I'm fortunate enough that the school is less then a mile down the road from me.

It used to be 60 minutes each way, 3 nights a week, 1900 to 0730.

It is now about 25 minutes each way, 5 days a week, M-F 0800-1700. Much better!

My commute is 5 minutes. My shifts are 8 or 11 hours. One day they might give me a 16 hour shift. If that happens I would get the next day off.

I think anyone who drives longer than 30 minutes is insane because weather can be bad in my state during winter. Safer and makes more sense to work less than 30 minutes away. Since I live close to work my boss likes to send me home first which if it happens too often I am going to complain. It is not my fault people chose to work 40-1 hour from their home. They could move closer. Shifts at my work start at 5am or earlier

what job do you have that you work from home? that is awesome!

13miles one way, 30-40min. I don't like it but am getting use to it. I wouldn't want to do more than this.

6 minutes/a little under 2 miles. I work 12 hour nights.

10 minutes and I normally do doubles 7a-11p

55 miles one way :( Hopefully I can relocate eventually.

Specializes in SNF, home health.

5 miles, 10 minutes on the highway, 11a-7p M-F.

But that will all change. I start school for my RN on Monday.

22 miles 1 way!

3 miles, or 10 minutes one way. This is the closest I have ever lived to a nursing job so I am thankful for it. My former commute was an hour one way and night shift. My current shifts are 12 hour nights, depends on what's happens at shift Change.

I feel bad for people who have to drive a long distance, because I remember how hard it was to Stay awake and what a pain it was to drive in the snow!

One mile. I roll up the hill. Then, I roll down the hill. Just like Jack and Jill. I think I'm Jill in the scenario and my car is Jack?

12 hour day shift.

Sometimes, I envy my coworkers with longer commutes. The short commute doesn't give me anytime to wake up before work or anytime to cool down after work. I go to work with sheet marks on my face and I come home guns blazing.
