Nursery nurses....what do you think about this?

Published

Hi All,

When I was in the nursery this past semester there was one nursery nurse that would round on her babies to find out how much they ate. If the baby was breast fed and the mom didn't breast feed the baby a certain amount of time (I think it was 15 minutes per side), the nurse would take the baby to the nursery and give them a formula bottle without telling the mother. Does that kind of thing normally occur? If so, how often do you end up doing things like that? She was the only nurse I ever saw do this.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

I have heard stories from other nurses that this was a common practice lllooonnnggg ago.

Obviously it depends on the hospital but I have seen this quite a bit. Honestly if I had another baby in a hospital I would be quite suspicious of anyone who took my baby to the nursery for any reason. Not fair for all the good nurses out there, but like anything else the bad ones ruin it for everyone.

Specializes in NICU.

We have to get consent to give formula.

oh thats baddddd. here in nz they dont even call it formula anymore. it breast milk substiute and that room in the hosp is down the corridor and locked
