Nurse student advice

Published

Hello, I'm currently at a community college for my ADN... I tried to get in the program but Iv never completed all my prereqs, with that being said, I won't make the deadline to apply for the program. Should I by pass the program and work on finishing my liberal arts degree which I have 3 semesters left. Then go to university and get my BSN, or should I just focus on the prereqs for the ADN program and apply year after next? I'm 23 year old and I feel like I should waist anymore time I should of have a degree under my belt by now I think. Please give me feedback, I'd love to hear your advice

Yea most likely I will go for my ADN first. I feel that it will probably be the best option for right now.

After you get your ADN you can start to work .. And get your bsn while

Working online.

I say get those last pre-reqs finished. I am 29 and a mom of two young kids and I have been working on my pre-reqs for nursing since 2011! I finally made it into a BSN program and I start in Jan 2015. I will only have two years of classes to get my BSN. Don't work on a liberal arts degree until you have completed all your nursing pre-reqs. Especially if you only have a few more classes to go. It is hard to get into any nursing program and since your really close keep working towards that. Your liberal arts degree wont do anything for you - you still have to take a nursing associates degree program to be a nurse. If you finish your pre-reqs go into that ADN program next year then all you have left is a 1 year online BSN program. If you got your liberal arts degree you would still have to go back and do the ADN program then do the BSN. OR you would go right into a BSN program and have 3 years plus.

For a person that now has two degrees, where the first one I couldn't do anything with, except go back to school, I would axe the Liberal Arts degree. Those degrees are for people who don't know what they want to do in life. So just to have a degree, they go that route. Waste of time. Do the nursing route. There are some online BSN programs that are 15months--WGU, UTA in Texas, but you would have to find online BSN programs in your state so you can attend clinicals since you are not already a nurse. But there are some pretty snazzy programs out there where you don't necessarily have to be in the state to complete your clinicals as an undergrad. I've been made aware that they are out there, but don't know specifically what schools. To me, ADN and BSN schools are all competitive. Especially ADNs, where it is not as stringent to get into as a BSN program. I would try both routes, because you are not guaranteed anything. Good luck! Make good grades!! Oh, and never sacrifice your job for school. Find a school that works with your financial situation. Financial aid doesn't pay enough to support your private financial situations.
