My overall cumulative is 3.1 and my nursing GPA is a 3.5. They do ask for both cumulative and nursing GPA's. Are both of your GPA's right under a 3.0?

Lcr1714- Did you send yours via USPS or FedEx? I'm sending mine off either tomorrow afternoon or Friday morning, and I'm paranoid it will get lost in the mail or something.. haha. I'm going to see if they can include a tracking number or delivery confirmation of some sort.

I am applying for the Women's Health track. Has anyone else submitted their application package yet?

Agreed with Zippy7. If you're a new graduate, your objective is like all the other thousands of new graduates - to get a job! If you want to have one for each specific position, that can work. I've talked to dozens of nursing and HR managers and it's not necessary as a new grad. I can't seem to get a 4.0 in nursing school like I did in undergrad, but I do know my job stuff - good luck :)

A 3.0 is a 3.0. From the sounds of this thread there are a lot of people that were not accepted or were waitlisted with GPAs of 3.5. Just a thought. Any chance you can take a class at your school to bump it up that .1?

BSNstudent988.. I actually live in Nashville so I hand delivered mine.

SJ73201...I am pretty sure they require at least a 3.0. My Nursing GPA is a 3.7 and I still question if thats good enough. I heard GPA is waived high for an interview but not sure how accurate that is.

To anyone that was accepted to the program in previous years, I need some advice. I am due to graduate Dec. 2012 with my BSN at a State University. Right now my overall GPA is a 3.8 (with a lot of bio/math courses such as Chem, Organic Chem, Zoo, Calc, etc. -- all of which are 4.0) and nursing GPA is a 3.5. I am externing at a local hospital on the cardiac telemetry floor. I am going to apply to the Winter 2013 Critical Care track at Vanderbilt. However, I overheard one of my classmates state that a friend applied to the program and was turned down due to lack of volunteer experience.

I am having trouble fitting volunteer time in with my schooling, externship, and I have a 4 year-old-child to care for as well.

How much weight does the committee place on the volunteer experience, and do I have a shot in getting accepted into the program?

Thanks for any advice you can give,

- G

I don't have any advice on how much volunteer experience is weighted in the application process. Are you looking at volunteering with a hospital or a different type of organization? I only ask because hospitals usually require a set number of service hours per week, where as you may be able to find more flexible opportunities with a local organization. I currently volunteer at a local pregnancy center, and they are very flexible and allow me to volunteer as often as I would like, for however many (or few) hours I can do with my schedule. I want to go into women's health after I graduate, so this option was perfect for me because I get to volunteer and learn in a setting that I love (which extends beyond our OB rotation in school). In a hospital, I believe they will send you to whichever department or area that is in need. Just something to consider, at least. Hope it helps.

I also heard that volunteer experience is very important. A friend of mine is in the winter 2012 track and is working with a lady that sits in on interviews and said it is actually more important then a tech position while in school.

Volunteer experience is important for most of these programs and especially ones that are ultra competitive. I have volunteered at different hospitals and usually they require 4 hours a week. The shifts are usually 4 hours and you can usually work more than one shift.

Right now I am volunteering one shift at the VA in Puerto Rico but I am planning on adding another shift in a different dept next month. And it is so cool because the nurses let us do all kinds of stuff. It is so much fun.

I am getting pretty excited. We should be hearing within the next couple of weeks!

so whats the status on everyones application?

I got an interview for critical care :)
