2012 Nurse Residency Program at Vanderbilt

U.S.A. Tennessee

Published

I am applying to the nurse residency program winter 2012 at Vanderbilt. Is anybody else applying??:D

I am also applying for Summer 2012 Critical Care. I graduate in May 2012 from Belmont University. I hear they take more out of state residents than in town so good luck to you all.

any advice for those of us trying to get in the summer 2012 group it would be greatly appreciated.

My letter of intent that I sent in was only a page long and it explained my short term and long term goals..both of which stated to stay at vanderbilt

My previous work experience involves a summer III externship at mayo clinic (i think this is the only reason why i was accepted)

I also have lots of volunteer work, but not as much leadership roles.

Throughout the interview i focused on three things: 1. professional development 2. educational opportunities 3. nursing research

i used a lot of words that are found in their mission and values: high-quality, patient-centered nursing care.

good luck! let me know if you have any specific questions

To those who got in, I was wondering if you can let us know wait listers your deadline for accepting the offer. Thanks for the info!

we need to let them know by this friday, november 18.

I'm an adn and got on the waitlist. They do accept ADNs.

do u have am idea of why you may have been waitlisted? i ask because i'm very nervous about applying for the summer and i'm trying to do all i can to increase my chances of getting in. i don't have any volunteer work. i am a Cat Scan tech for a level one trauma hospital so i'm trying to see if they exclude people who haven't work as student nurses or nursing assistants.

I'm a student nurse at a large hospital here and have a lot of volunteer and leadership experience. I actually have a bachelors degree in something else as well. I think I was waitlisted because I don't have a ton of pediatric direct care experience and I didn't do an official externship though what I do now is the same thing.

yeah that sucks i haven't did any volunteer work and i don't have an leadership experience however i work with critical care patients all the time. i do all their cat scans. so i guess i'm nervous because i don't have alot of this stuff that many people that are getting in have so it almost seem like its very competitive.

just to chime in on this discussion--- i think because tries to be fair in their selection process, they do a point system for everything from beginning to end. when you first apply, you'll notice a sheet that asks for things like "clubs and leadership", "externships or work experience", and "volunteer work". i imagine that the more you have to add to those, the best your chances are. if i recall correctly, they ask for those experiences from the last 6 months of nursing school for each candidate. i know that for me, i only had something to put in the volunteer section since i attended a 1-year accelerated bsn program and i didn't have time for a lot of things. i have a previous bs degree, i worked as a scientist by profession, and had a good gpa, but i think because i didn't have a lot of nursing-type activities yet, this could possibly have put me on the wait list.
