Nurse Pract. in Florida 2015

Specialties NP

Hi,

I am looking to relocate to the Florida area (haven't decided on a particular city), but I was wondering how it is to work as a FNP in Florida. I was reading some previous threads and it Fl. doesn't seem to be the ideal place to work as a FNP. I am currently in Ga and we also have a lot of restrictions, however Fl is worse with NO controlled substances.

We are looking at the Tampa or Jacksonville area. Is it best to work at a clinic through the hospital??? I am just trying to see if this move would be worth it.

I currently have 6 months experience...but will have 2 years when I move next year. I am learning a lot now...being in a rural clinic.

Does anyone know the range in salary for FNP???

Thanks in advance!!! Any advice, tips...will be appreciated ;)

Not sure about specific FNP practice regulations, but I have lived in both Tampa and Jax. Housing in Tampa is more costly, but the beaches and the weather are much nicer. Also, it seems there is much more to do in Tampa.

Thanks so much!!! I heard the New Tampa area was really nice!!! ;)

Low salary range for those parts of Florida. Expect offers in the 70s (for 0-1yr exp). With 2 yrs experience, you may get better shot (80s). However, don't underestimate what you can get....your case may be an exception if employer decides a different method of payment- productivity/ profit sharing/ bonuses. Private practices want to see high productivity+efficiency.

Whatever job you end up interviewing for, make sure you negotiate very well.

No controlled substance in FL, yes!.....it's yuck!:***:. Goodluck

Thanks for the tips. I really have to find a book or article on negotiating. My current position was 1 of my precept sites...so I didn't do much negotiating. Ga is very similar with pay...however I hope to at least do mid 80s with good benefits when I move off to Florida. I just don't want to be in an office in which I am overwhelmed...trying to reach the amt. of patients needed for bonuses and such. My location now...requires a min. of 14 for the quarterly bonuses...which isn't bad at all. Are you currently working in either of those areas ...tesses

Yes I do, Like I said, offices differ. 14 is a darn good number!!!..I personally see more than that (25-30/day for productivity reasons)...private practice: the more you see, the higher your earning potential. I made 6 figures this past year.I interviewed some friends in the same city, no one else made close to what I made. With Base salary in the 80s and quarterly bonuses, I think its a fair deal too.....too much hard work burn you out.

Thanks for your input. I love seeing less patients since I am still a new grad. Usu. average 15 a day. Thanks again! Will start the fun application process this summer for my license. Hope to have everything squared away. I also have 1 last question...any suggestions on who I could go through for . My current employer carries that for us and its not a requirement for the Ga license.

All of my friends that graduated with me were offered starting jobs mids80s and up. With 2 years experience I wouldn't settle for less than 90-95. I am in Tampa. There is currently a bill in the senate that *might* allow us controlled substance scripts by next year. However, other than that, it really isn't that restrictive. The docs also are well used to writing all the controlled substance scripts so not a big deal. I would have your employer cover your malpractice. There are several threads on here of what to negotiate for. The other thing is don't allow for too restrictive of a non-compete. Haven't heard that one mentioned much. You will make more if you go for a RVU model with bonuses or a percentage of billing.

I agree with the above comment. Salary is so variable, but jobs are somewhat scarce.

As for controlled substances...It really isn't an issue. Physicians want that right now, so let them take the risk. Put it under their name, let them sign the hard copy.

They created the prescription drug problem in Florida, let them sort it out, IMO.

Thanks so much!!! 90's or so...that's amazing! Ga is also behind the ball game with pay for midlevel providers. Do you know of anyone working or have worked for 1 of the tampa family health centers...thinking about working at 1...to see if I can get the loan repayment. I know the pay wouldn't be as great...but if I can get some loans paid off...it will be worth it. Any tips...would help!

Jwalla20. I am relocating from WI with experience. I was wondering your experience with relocating and finding an NP job? Did you take a position with Tampa Family Health? I have an offer but am tied up in the logistics of the contract especially the $10000 fine to leave early and the 90 day notice along with the lower pay. I would love to know your experience finding a job. I have applied to at least 20 and am not getting many calls. I already attained florida ARNP license and have been practicing for almost a year in employee health/acute care.
