Hello All,
I had an incident about two weeks ago when a patient was incorrectly using his colostomy. His site was grossly anastomosed on contact precautions due to his stool, and because of his anastomsis, used paper clips to help attach his bag.
I decided to empty his bag, since my hospital has a wound consultant M-F (This was a Saturday). I emptied it, and he was upset! I told him of my hospital's policy about cleaning out the bags, making sure they are emptied. His response that he had plenty of bags, and he throws them away. I told him I understand thta he had his own technique, but when it came to the hospital policy, I was only ensuring the policy and thta I did not want his stoma to become infected. He told me to take my policy and shove it and that he would slap me. I told hime that I will ignore that comment and left the room. He apoligized, but I still reported him to my nurse manager and the Patient Safety committee.
I leave a question about not only our patient's safety but what about our safety?:uhoh21:

From ready the post lately there seems to be a lot of our safty that we are having to worry about. Has it always been this way or is this a new concern we are going to face for the years to come?
I was one threatened on the phone verbally four years ago, and I know people can get upset-illness is an upsetting time, but I really think that sooner or later this issue needs to be looked at.:chair:
