Nurse to Patient Ratio in North Carolina

Published

Hello you all. I will be graduating from nursing school in california and be moving to North Carolina very soon. Iam very nervous because I know there are not mandated patient to nurse ratios in North Carolina. I was wondering what is the nurse to patient ratio that can be expected in North Carolina? If anyone knows about the nurse to patient ratio in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina that would be really helpful!!! Also, do hospitals generally hire CNAs to do vitals signs, basic care......? Thank you very much!

Specializes in EMS, ER, GI, PCU/Telemetry.

i'm in the durham/raleigh area and my pt ratio is 6 to 1. my bf works in the greenville area with a pt ratio of 5 to 1. we both work with CNAs and nurse techs.

as far as cape fear med ctr though, i'm not sure.

good luck with your move and your new job!!! :)

Hi flightnurse2b,

I was wondering- what exactly are nurse techs? Thank you so much for replying to my message. I appreciate your time.

nurse techs are usually students in nursing school who have completed their fundamentals courses. they are similar to a CNA, but where i work can d/c foleys and IVs, do dry dressings, sometimes trach care and g-tube feedings. it probably varies by facility tho.

:)

From what I have heard the patient ratios at that facility are not very good. I have not worked there myself, just heard it from coworkers who have worked at Cape Fear in the past. You might want to check into that. Good luck!

would u happen to have any idea on the specific nurse to patient ratios u heard at Cape Fear?

I am so sorry that I do not know the exact numbers. I just know people who have worked there and been very frustrated. One really good nurse I know just stayed 2 weeks in their ED and came back. That was about 2 years ago though, so maybe they have improved. I found this one link:

Good luck to you. I hope things have gotten better there and you have an exccellent experience.

It depends on the unit you are working in as far as patient ratios are concerned (for Cape Fear Valley). On the general med-surg floors I have heard on nights the ratio is as high as 7:1, the ICU's 2-3:1, Peds 5:1. Hope this helps.

Specializes in med-surg, oncology, critical care.

Gosh, Our ratio on med-surg floor were 8:1 on first. Nights 12:1 sometimes.

Oncololgy sometimes 5:1 but mostly 8:1. Post Intensive Care 3:1, CC 2:1

At my hospital an NA II can do all of those things

At Baptist, the ratio varies per unit. But I've been on some units that can hold 26 pts with 6 nurses and at least 5 NA's.

I work on a med surg oncology unit and the nurses usually have somewhere between 3 and 5 pts each.

At the small community hospital in which I work part-time, we average ~ 4 patients on the Med-Surg/CCU Unit.
