Specializes in LTAC.

I’m a fairly recent LPN (about four months) working at a LTAC hospital. I am looking for a mentor. There are some nurses at my work that I could ask, but honestly, I don’t want to feel like a burden by asking them. Any suggestions on how to find a mentor?

Specializes in Psych (25 years), Medical (15 years).

Mentors don't necessarily need to be a formal assigned role, like one designated or assigned to precept or orientate, lo95.

There are those who we may wish to emulate due to their experience and the way in which they carry themselves and/or perform their duties.

Mentors are experienced and trusted advisers who we can meet in any given situation. By merely observing their ways and questioning them, they become our mentors.

I have had many mentors in my life, from my Dad to school teachers to nurses with whom I admired in their abilities, methods, and the manner in which they carried themselves.

Specializes in None.

Have you had any luck? l’m a new nurse and I would love to have a mentor. I just don’t know where to start or who to ask.

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.

Start by finding that nurse who is approachable and willing to answer questions. Someone you feel comfortable with. They are out there.

Specializes in Psych, Corrections, Med-Surg, Ambulatory.

You don't need anyone to formally agree to be your mentor.  I found all my mentors informally.

They're the ones whose work you admire, who are approachable and willing to answer questions, and who won't shy away from telling you what you need to hear.

Approach everyone with questions and concerns, and see who emerges from the pack.

You might have different mentors for different purposes.  Some will be good at nursing procedures, some at navigating workplace politics, some will provide emotional support.

Good luck.

Hi! I'm willing to mentor you if you still need it
