Hi I am a nursing school student that is failing. "Weeding" season has begun in my program and I am at risk for getting plucked. No instructors or faculty members can be trusted to turn to. I know you all are busy people but I was just wondering if anyone would be willing to adopt me????? I need a nursing mentor really badly just for advice and help when its needed. Please please pretty please!!!!???? BTW, I am in the BSN program.
I believe all/any/some of us would be willing to help. What type of help are you looking for exactly. Med surg/pharm/OB..? You sound very frustrated as we have all experienced a time or two ourselves in nursing school. I do not agree that ALL nursing instructors are the same. But, with any profession, there is always going to be that one that you feel will make or break you. It looks bad on the school if so many student "FAil". It is an indication of their (instructors) performance and for those of us that look into a school with a good track record, that is one of the criteria. So, in response to your first initial question.......What area's are you looking for help in?
I'm sorry that you're experiencing that. However, mean and uncaring nursing instructors isn't the norm everywhere. At my school, they truly care about whether we succeed and try to give us every tool to learn (with a 98% NCLEX pass rate).
Do you know anyone in the program a semester or two ahead of you that you can talk to? Someone who's been there, done that, and lived to tell the tale? That might be something to consider. Also, don't freak about getting minimal passing grades on an exam. You have several other exams to help you raise your grade if you're going for As and Bs. Otherwise, C=RN
There are some instructors who like to scare students. I think part of it is an attempt to counteract some of the cocky, entitled attitudes that many students come in with. I understood what they were doing but found it counterproductive and really annoying. Thankfully I did not find most of my instructors to be this way.
I had some instructors who attempted to write NCLEX style questions that were just crap. Unfortunately being a student in this situation is a bit like being a patient at a mental hospital saying they were wrongly committed... it just seems to fall on deaf years. But I feel your pain. Very frustrating when you are studying so hard and know material but just can't figure what answer they want.
For me nursing school was mostly about jumping through hoops and learning what I could along the way. I agree with one of the prior posters that probably the best mentor you can get is someone who is ahead of you in the program. They will know and understand the piddly stuff that your program/instructors. It sounds like you are a good student and know the actual course information, but what you need is someone to help guide you through the BS of the BSN program you are in. Does that sound about right?
As for nursing questions and moral support allnurses is a great place to come. I still seek help here regularly. Please don't be to frustrated that you haven't had a bunch of people online step up to fill the spot. If it is a crazy program and crap questions you are dealing with I don't think any of us can be of much help.
Having said all that... if there is anything I can help you with let me know.
Really?! Where?!?? My instructors were nothing like that. They were very, very, helpful and held exam reviews before and after tests. And, my program mandated that anyone who scored 74% or less on any test be tutored by an upperclassman. If you were a senior, obviously you wouldn't have that, but the instructors were always up for helping you succeed in any way they can. And, my school has had a 98-99% NCLEX pass rate (first time takers) consistently over the past couple of years.
Is this a diploma program you graduated from?
I complained about the exams and the instructors all through nursing school...so did my classmates. We said how mean the instructors were, how condescending and rude they were...we said that they tested us on stuff that we never covered and that the test questions were ridiculous. But guess what....we were prepared for NCLEX and prepared for nursing in the real world. Every nurse that I work with that has made it through the same nursing program that I went through is a good nurse. Looking back I am thankful that I went through the program I did even though I hated it at the time.
At my University we have a Mentoring program to help the underclassmen figure out best ways to study, teachers to take, to vent, to find more additional resources. I'm one of the 5 for the nursing school. Does your program have anything like that? Sometimes talking to an upperclassmen can help, they have great ideas on how to pass with teachers who's teaching style maybe doesn't match yours. Like I tell my underclassmen, just be aware of some upperclassmen with "horror" stories, they can be discouraging. Hope you figure things out.
As far as I knew, all nursing schools are like this. Our school was infamous for this. There's always 4 right answers but only 1 best answer. The rationale for this is to develop and improve your ability to "crtically think" and also to get you ready for NCLEX. Nclex is the same way.... only 1 best answer!
So if you give us an example of a question that stumps you, maybe I can show you what I mean... ??? Ok?
Don't get discouraged! That's exactly what they want to you do. By sticking at it and showing improvement you will win their admiration. Trust me!!! I did it :))

Lol, this is not typical nursing instructor behavior. I just refuse to believe that. I could understand if this were one of those exclusive, prestigious nursing schools but most people have never even heard of this school as I am quickly finding out here and some do not have the best things to say about it. However, I do not go by what I hear I go by what I experience and it is like wow. I am an older student. I have done a 4 year stint in college in a Computer Science program. There were critical and analytical questions all over those exams but never did they contradict themselves in any form. Nursing is the opposite. But still with the instructors here, no they are not like most schools and offer programs for failing nurse students and yes those do exist trust me in my family there are 3 of us in nursing school, all at different schools. Their schools offer programs or guidance from instructors if they are not doing well in a course. My school does no such thing. I have many N-CLEX books, before my mom became a medical practitioner she was an RN, MSN and Nurse Practitioner. She has put me on to alot of N-CLEX books, test taking tips and strategies for nursing school books, etc. None of the answers to the questions on that exam had I ever seen in any N-CLEX book. They were all made up from the instructor panel opinions. With this nursing program it is like US against THEM and it is too late to get out or else wait 5 years before trying to get into another program.
Basically I came over here asking one thing and clearly the answer is no. So, thank you all anyway!
