Nurse with no hospital experience

Published

I have had this questions for awhile now. Maybe someone can help me answer it.

I always wanted to work in a hospital. I live in NY and getting a hospital position is extremely difficult, if not impossible. Without experience that is. So, as a new grad ( I graduated almost 2 years ago), I went out to get my RN experience. I started off doing home care, which I did for about a year. I now work as a charge nurse in a long term care facility/nursing home. My goal is a hospital so I still send out resumes to them. When I speak to recruiters and nursing directors, they all tell me that I need hospital experience. Not just hospital experience but experience in the field that I am applying for. For nicu they want nicu experience; for pediatrics they want pediatric experience; for medsurg they want medsurg experience...and so on. (and yes I've spoken to many recruiters about different positions. They all say the same thing)

Now please tell me...how will I ever get to work in a hospital?

If you're willing to commute and/or relocate to parts of central NY or western NY where few people want to live, I'm almost certain you could find more than one hospital that would hire you and allow you to amass the acute care hospital experience you're seeking.

When I was a new grad, I went through the same thing. I moved to an area of shortage, so that I could get my hospital experience. I did end up with plenty of it, moved back to my hometown, and never had problems getting a job again.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Home Health.

CVPH in Plattsburgh is always looking for nurses. The cost of living is cheap compared to NYC, and Montreal is an hour away.
