Published

Hello, I am in the Air Force. I recently applied to the 2010 Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Progam (NECP). I am waiting for the board results. Anyone else out there as anxious as me?

Hi, for people in overseas locations I hope this helps: -- AFI 13-2013: 1.11. Overseas Curtailment for Attending Air Force Commissioning Programs. Individuals serving in an overseas area interested in applying for an Air Force commissioning program requiring a Date Eligible for Return from Overseas (DEROS) curtailment must comply with all provisions listed in AFI 36-2110. These procedures provide applicants a window of opportunity to serve as much of their tour length as possible. Monitoring of this window is critical to the success of the applicants submitting their commissioning application. AFRS will initiate DEROS curtailment requests for BOT selectees as required.-- AFI 13-2013: airman cannot apply to AECP or NECP is they have served less than 1/2 their tour. (BUT, this can be curtailed, see above) -- AFI 13-2013 You must apply before the 25th day of the 8th month before your DEROS. (this is so you won't have an assignment selection)AFI 13-2013: Airman may voluntarily request an extension of their overseas tour to become eligible for consideration under this rule. AFPC/DPAA5 will consider overseas tour extensions on their own merits. Send the request to AFPC/DPAA5.(I had to extend my DEROS to have enough time left otherwise I would have been selected for an assignment.Having an assignment selection is another item on the checklist that requires a waiver.) Bottom Line: I recommend trying to figure out your time table early and make your plans/do your research. Also, I let my leadership know what I was planning to do pretty early, so when it came time to get curtailments/extensions, etc. they were working with me. Also, if you have any waivers, curtailments, AFPC DPAMN will coordinate with your APFC FM to get your "waiver". You do not need to submit paperwork or anything, just coord with Mr. B for those items.I knwo this is a lot, but it is tricky when you are overseas. I hope this helps...:)

Thank you for finding all of that info. for me. So we are going to Elmendorf with a RNLTD of Sep 30th (long tour) I was planning on applying for AECP/NECP Fall semester 2012. That would mean I wouldn't be eligible right? Because Fall semester would begin right before my 1/2 tour length of 2 years, and in that senario it is NOT waiverable right? I'd have to wait yet another year :( am I confusing myself or making sense at all? LOL. Would Mr. Baker be able to clarify this situation for me better? You all have been so helpful to me, thank you guys. Hopefully one day I'll be waiting on some results from a board.....one day LOL ?

BrookeND, school starts in Aug 2012, and your 1/2 point of your tour would be Sep 2012, right? I would try for the curtailment. The worst they can tell you is no. BTW, for the "waivers", Mr. B will request those from your FM AFTER the notification of intent date closes out. I knew within the week that my FM would release me from my career field if I get selected.

You could try to report in August... then it would be exactly 1/2 lol

I am in the process of trying to get a curtailment as well for my o/s assignment. Another factor they look at is the manning of your career field. Mine is 140% manned in TSgts, so even though I am curtailing by 2 years and 2 months of a 4-yr tour I have a good chance of getting the curtailment approved. My MPF told me there that it is an exception to policy for education purposes. I wrote up a conditional DEROS curtailment request in case I was accepted and had it endorsed by my squadron commander then sent it to AFPC. They denied it because they either grant the curtailment or don't; there is no such thing as a "conditional" DEROS curtailment they told me. But they also said that if picked up for NECP, they would curtail my assignment. My Superintendent emailed my CFM today (he already knew about me from a few months ago as well) to tell him he may be getting a curtailment request for me and to please approve it if so since my career field is overmanned and we have an inbound MSgt this summer. Hope this helps some!

So, kynchanted, if they approve your curtailment and you do not get selected for NECP...what happens?

They (AFPC/DPAMN) will only request the curtailment if I get accepted. But if something like that were to happen, you have to then apply for a DEROS reinstatement to get your original DEROS back. Since they don't actually have you as a projected gain anywhere it isn't a big issue to get (from what DEROS Mgmt at MPF says).

Hey you all!!! Thanks for all that advice :) I have class today at the education center so I went ahead and spoke to my advisor here for AECP and asked her about the time on station overseas and she said I could request a TOS waiver so that's what I'm going to do. Is that the same thing as curtailment? I thought curtailment meant like an extension on your current assignment so you couldn't be moved until you were done applying and awaiting the results. I'm learning a lot here, this is my first PCS since leaving tech. school. I didn't want to say anything but I am only an E-3 that's why I have so much to learn about all this lingo lol. You all have a lot of experience and I was kind of intimidated by that, that's why I didn't put that out there at first. Anyways, I hope I can get the TOS straightened out when it comes time for it. I also scheduled my AFOQT today, I take it July 8th. I'm going to start studying tonight. Oh everyone who applied for AECP here as well as NECP my advisor told me that out of 97 people who went to the board this year for AECP (not just nursing) only 44 were selected due to funding and the force reduction :( but she said it will get better soon. There were 14 people selected for nursing but she lost where she wrote down exactly how many went to the board lol, out of the 4 packages she helped put together 3 were selected from Minot. This lady knows her stuff and she is the sweetest, so if anyone ever wants to contact her PM me and I will give you all her email. She's still going to help me with my questions and stuff when I get to Elmendorf so I am so thankful for that!

Brooke, dont be silly... that is what the thread is for. I think its great that you are thinking so far ahead and know what you want to do! TOS is the amount of time you need to be on station before they will release you for AECP/NECP/OTS, etc. So for NECP stateside it's 1 year TOS, overseas short is 9 months TOS, and overseas long is 1/2 the tour length TOS. If you need anything less than than those required TOS, that is when you will need approval, and what we are callign a curtailment. Hope that helps...

Oh, the thing that keeps you from being PCS'd is called an assignment code. The education office can enter that into the system for you once you have applied (or given notification to apply) to the program. If you happen to be inside your assignment window when the packages are due, this will keep you from getting an assignment. This is mostly helpful for peopel that are stationed stateside, since you can get nabbed for an assignment anytime after your 2 yrs TOS. For overseas, we typically apply well before our window (required by reg to have at least 8 months left on your DEROS, which is outside of the OS returnee window) I think someone did alot of research and planned it that way...:)

zx7chelle----Were we suppose to have the Education office put a code in for us.....I know that with AECP you are supposed to but I dont remember seeing that in the 2010 NECP guidelines......

Brooke---were you looking at going to a school in Nebraska?

Hi, no you don't "have" to...but you can. I needed to have the AAC put in because I needed to re-enlist. When I re-enlisted, I was supposed to get a bonus. There is a way to postpone receiving bonus payments IF "member has applied to commissioning program...." Basically I postpone my bonus until after the selection board (in case I get in, I won't owe any money back or need approval from my FM, if I don't get in, I can retroactively collect my bonus). To prove to MPF that I applied to commissioning program, I had to have the code put in. Did I explain that OK?
