Nurse Corps Scholarship 2017-2018

Published

Hi everyone,

I am interested in applying to the nurse corps scholarship 2017 2018 in order to pay for my accelerated program of sixteen months. I have a bachelors in sociology. I have done quiet a few researches. The application cycle will be open this month but I don't know which exact date. I have read discussion threads of previous years and have found really helpful information. I want to create a platform where interested applicants can ask questions, share information, discuss and help each other.

Thanks

The stipend could definitely be a tax burden depending on your current financial situation. It's worth checking into before signing the contract if you receive the award.

Yes, many people from my cycle didn't look into it and struggled a lot at tax time. Trust me, taxes are the last thing your going to want to be figuring out when you are neck deep in your program. I think that and making sure there are service facilities in your area are the two most important things to look at before signing that contract.

For those in your cycle who are already working as nurses... are they just putting aside part of the stipend for taxes? If offered, we should add the scholarship amount AND the stipend amount to our income?

I don't really understand your question? We get stipends for the months we are in school. If they are working as nurses in there service commitment they don't get the stipend anymore, or if they work while in school they are responsible for the taxes based on their individual circumstances, there are 100 of us in my face book group, I don't talk to them enough to know how they all handled there taxes.

The stipend comes as a W2 and the institution is as a 1099 misc, yes they are both counted as income. The entire award is taxable. That's why it is imperative to have an accountant that knows how to handle the paper work.

Not all students are BSN. I'm in a direct entry program. So next semester will be my final semester of 3. Afterwards I'll be working as an RN while I complete the rest of my MSN which is online/distance. (This portion doesn't count as part of the service commitment. Only after I've completed the MSN)

I realize all of this is a bunch of "what if" and speculation at this point because they haven't even sent award emails. Thank you again. If selected get an accountant... noted! Lol.

Ya the stipend and everything else is taxable, no matter the circumstance. What your liability will be is based on your total income. An accountant will be ablr to help you with that. Also once you are selected you be assigned an analyst who will be your resource for questions about your situation, however they won't give you tax insight, because there are so many variables.

Ok I feel stupid, so when I checked my credit karma when everyone got their credit check, I didn't check under every agency, so even today, my CK said no hard inquiry and that the next update is on July30! I was like well I gave it my all and was glad a had a backup plan with a local HPOG program which won't even have the service requirement. Then I looked again and scrolled down to transunion and same no hard inquiries. I looked up and Equifax was next, so I clicked on it and lo and b hold, it said you have one recent item and what do you know HARD INQUIRY FROM CREDCO on July 24th!!!!. So check the different reports under CK but Equifax seems to be the one everyone saw it on.

I called and asked before applying about funding for my summer classes, they asked when the term will end and if during July 1st I am still doing summer classes, I said yes and they told me they will back pay all summer tuition. It was also talked about during one of the conference calls as long as they are nursing classes and you are stilll doing it when the July 1st contract year begins. Also, you had to have included 2017-2018 in your application for funding, which I did!

There have been reports in the past from some people but it's more likely that these individuals overlooked the hard inquiry on the credit report versus not receiving one. For example, if they didn't check Equifax they probably didn't see the credit check as it wasn't reported to TransUnion or Experian, etc.

NWOHRN, read your post after finding out but you are right, I was one of the ones that thought I didn't get credit check, but I did! I just didn't look under Equifax, till today! But there had been people that got awarded without credit check in past forums so it may just happen for someone, especially if someone decline their offer and they do another round of picks next. It ain't over till it's over September 30th!

AwwwThank you Hello33 for your encouraging words, I just read this today, had a busy week at a school! So I got the credit check but CK and experian didn't show it on its summary, I had to click on Equifax fax and it said Credco07/24!! Figures crossed that we all get it!

I am hopingggggggg that I can have summer covered if awarded even though I did not list it. I would love to send my plus loans back! Lol.

Also if you are looking for a site, know that you can always type in the exact address of a site, find the score and if qualifies for primary care. When I used the HRSA search tool it gave me a limited number of sites but I was able to find major hospitals in my area that qualify but they aren't listed.
