Hello All,
I am applying for the nurse corps loan repayment program 2016 cycle, I just spoke to a representative who told me the application cycle opens up tomorrow. For those of you who have applied any tips advice etc.? I am very excited about this opportunity because I have an outrageous amount of loans.
D/I ratio 225%. I am not sure what score to look though? can someone help?

Ugh. No credit check for me, so turned down for the second year in a row. I actually altered my job so that I could apply for nurse corps--I used to split my time between two clinics in the same system, same HPSA, but you must only work at one site to qualify for the repayment. This is not a requirement for NHSC, so who knows why.
Last year I really sweated it and held out hope until the bitter end, and they make you wait until September before sending a rejection. I get it, because they're seeing if more money will come through, but it is still really hard.
I work in a HPSA 14 site with a DTI of about 80%. My union recently negotiated a really substantial pay raise. No complaints at all, but it's going to make the DTI even lower next year.
BUT, for those who get it, congratulations! That is really something to celebrate.

While this reward to serve communities in need, as healthcare professionals is a blessing if received - it is almost a curse to have to bear the day to day WAITING. As this being my 4th year with no luck, I believe I've become immune to the "hopeful" feeling and that makes me sad. I so desperately could use this financial aid, as I know each and every one of us could. Every year, excluding this one, I would check my email and HRSA account daily...and be disappointed every time. It became an obsession, and each year come the end of October, I would receive the dreaded- "Thank you for applying but we have run out of funds. Please try again next year". Absolutely heartbreaking. I wish there were a better way to pay off our student loans...I feel like all I pay is the interest. Ugh!
I absolutely love being a nurse, and there is no way that I would change that, but the cost of school is just too regoshderndiculous these days.
It's a shame that a WONDERFUL opportunity like this, has so little information about how they really choose the awardees. I think once the applications are submitted and the ineligible ones are weeded out, we should be notified of the number of eligible canidates that there are, how many are in each group (NP's, RN's, and Faculty), and what tier they are placing us in. That would cause a lot less stress and confusion, and would even give us a better idea of where we may fall in the mix.
Come July, we will start hearing who has been awarded. I will be so thrilled for those whom receive it, and hopeful that those who reapply next year will succeed in getting it. GOOD LUCK!!!
