Cliques

Nurses Relations

Published

Hello, I keep hearing about how cliques are in the hospital setting and it is making me nervous. I graduate w/BSN in Aug. 2012 and getting ready to join the work force. I never fit into cliques in high school or grade school or nursing school for that matter. Any advice on how to either be a graceful outcast or fit into a clique? Ugh. Dreading this. BTW, I'm in my 50's, older nurse if that makes a difference.

Thank you,

elle

I would wait to cross that bridge when I got to it. You will have your hands full just trying to get that first job. Good luck.

Dear Canesdukegirl,

Thank you so much for all your kind words and great input. You spent some time on your post and I took every bit of it in, I so badly need guidance and support right now. Your post was interesting and a confidence builder. I'd like to think that my skills and conscientiousness are the aspects that merit is based on and not how I look or how much I identify with the cliques. I feel confident that I'll be a good nurse, just not as confident that I will instill that sentiment in others.

I understand what you mean by the socializing aspect of human nature. Although I do realize that perceptions and group dynamics plays a key role in personal interactions, it still feels like doo doo to be treated with anything less than respect.

Elle

Thanks to all for your posts and your sublime input that can only come from experience. I listened and took in every word of all your posts. You left me with positive feelings of transitioning from student to nurse. I'm actually looking forward to finding my niche.

Warmest regards,

Elle

Caliotter3, tell me about it. No one seems to be hiring new grads.

thank you,

Elle

GrnTea,

We can always count on you for our vocab lessons. Thanks.

speaking of that, what does Pierian spring mean

You're old enough to know that if you go in expecting trouble, you're likely to find it. Just be friendly and gracious with everyone. Don't be a know-it-all. If someone gives you trouble, don't take it personally.

My school definitely had cliques. Most students were friendly, but there were a few who thought they were God's gift to the nursing world. On the floor, I found there to be cliques too. IMHO, things work out naturally; you will be inclined toward certain individuals, while others you will realize it is best to remain professional and mostly superficial.

Yes, that is what I'm working on, not taking things personally. I tend to be reactionary and sensitive. I know these weaknesses will bury me. If they give me the initiation phase of being not so nice, I'll smile, smile, smile until the "kisses" start flowing in. I have to balance myself between the "know it all" attitude and being humble. There is some stigma with being older where people think you're slower so I try to compensate by being confident and it is sometimes perceived as being cocky or "always having to be right" attitude.

thank you!

Elle

Oh yeah, we have those cliques too in my school. They really do think they're the cream of the crop of nurses and everyone else is below them. They take photos of themselves and label them, "The dream Team" The funny thing is, when you look at their faces in the photos, they all look like Nurse Evil. ha ha! Like, you wouldn't want to be looking up from a gurny at that face. LOL! They are Christians and they all have a tattoo of a Cross on their ankles.
