NUR104: Excelsior Study Group

Nursing Students Excelsior

Hey Y'all

This is Brianna from the Excelsior NUR104 class. I thought we could post on here helpful study things for the upcoming test.

This is some of the stuff that our teacher sent me to look over before the test.

Communication between nurses (how is it done?) HIPPA (What is the nurse's role?) Do patients have protected information? Review Definitions in your reading (standardized language etc...

Review the steps of the nursing process ( provide examples of each, think of the week # 1 discussion and also create patient examples to prepare for exam # 1)

The components of a nursing diagnosis

Identifying nursing interventions based on the patient's diagnosis

Outcomes (Measurable - What is the RN expecting the patient to do, respond, etc…)

Assessment (What does the nurse do with the data?)

Delegation (What task can the RN delegate? Who can the RN delegate to? What must the RN consider when prior to?)

Identifying outcomes for patients based on their diagnosis (what are outcomes)

What is the nursing process

Also, I think it is good to look over the learning objectives in the front of each chapter and answer those. I don't know about yall but I have a hard time sitting down and reading each chapter in the textbook. So I like to answer the questions at the beginning to help me get a feel for what the chapter is about. Also, if yall got a new text book with a code in the front, it gives you access to additional study material on DavisPlus.com that is helpful!

Hi Brianna! Hoping that grouping together will help us to better succeed in this course! From the sound of it, we could all use a little help. I too have a difficult time reading the chapters and I focus on the objectives, especially after our professor had suggested this. I am not finding it to be anymore helpful though. I'm not sure what I'm missing. I know a big problem I have is the select all that apply questions so I'll be reviewing the links the professor sent over!

Hey Y'all

Your thread has been moved to our Excelsior College forum. Good luck to you.

I have a hard time with those ones as well! I am not sure why I keep getting half off for the questions where I have to define the words, when I copy them straight out of textbook! How did you do on the quiz #3?? I didn't do too well....

I did ok, passed it...barely. I did miss some information, but the select all that apply really got me on this last one. Here is some info she shared with me, in case not everyone gets the same tips.

Test Taking Tips:

  • I would encourage you to read the question out loud so that you have a solid grasp of what the question is asking you to do ( for example: what part of the nursing process it is identifying? , what is the priority intervention you should be looking for? , what are the principles you need to use to answer the question- physiology, communication?). Testing success requires you read literally and understand every word in the stem before you move to the response.
  • In the 'all that apply' questions every response could be correct and approaching them as 'true or false', statements will help you choose all that do apply. Each response should be 'tested' against the stem - not against each other.

  • Please review the this youtube video on select all that apply questions:

  • It is helpful in matching to Read all the items to be matched first so you know all the possibilities before answering anything. Then take the first one on the left and begin to match with the right side. Sometimes it is helpful when taking the test on the computer to place your cursor on the term on the left and 'highlight' it so you keep your concentration on that one item only.
  • When answering short answer questions, read the question carefully. Ask yourself, what are they specifically asking? List out in single terms specifics and then present them in a sentence ( for example: " washing hands before care, wearing gloves and maintaining sterile technique with dressings are all examples of nursing interventions that reduce the spread of infection" . Overall, give a specific, clear, to the point explanation.
  • For Calculations : Review the information presented in Taylor ch 39 related to the correct formula for calculation of IV fluid rates by gravity and by infusion pump. If you need additional practice in this skill, use the http://www.dosagehelp.com. You can review the application of the calculation of IV fluid in the interactive tutorial activities. The skill of accurate calculation in medication and intravenous fluid administration is a legal expectation of the RN scope of practice. I am most willing to work with you on this skill, contact me through the messages.
  • If you want to lean more about testing skills, you can look at Nugent, Patricia. (2012) Test Success (6thed.). Philadelphia: FA Davis either at the EC bookstore or Amazon, it may even be rentable. This text contains multiple ways to boost your test success, focuses on test question types, and presents you with an analysis method ( chapter 10) so you can analyze your testing behaviors. .

The select all questions got me too...

I hope this next quiz isn't as hard! I haven't taken it yet. Planning on taking it today

I have a few friends who are also doing this program (they are ahead as they are mostly testing out) and they highly recommended cram.com and studyguide101.com to help prep for quizzes and exams. I think they said you have to pay for one of them, but at this point I personally would not have any qualms about that.

at this juncture and contingent upon how this course goes i may test out i actually spoke with someone who completed this is '08 theyre and NP now strongly recommended those two as well as another program i am just worried about the cost$400-$800 :o/??

just got this via message...

  • General adaption syndrome
  • Anxiety (nurses assessment and interventions)
  • Coping mechanisms (can you explain them to a patient?)
  • Nursing Process ( create an example for each stage)
  • Outcomes (what are they, how should they be written?)
  • Patient teaching (what should the nurse do, assess?)
  • How should the RN communicate ( communication techniques, communicate with someone that speaks a different language)
  • How does the RN evaluate the patient's understanding of their teaching (return demonstration, verbal etc…)
  • What are the components of a teaching plan (what does the nurse need to do?)
  • What should the RN assess prior to initiating a teaching plan?

cant lie i am almost frantic because i have never barely passed/failed a course and it looks like that may be where this is heading. a computer is grading our written responses im freaking out and i also dislike "critiquing" my classmate's work! i know everyone puts in alot of effort..who am i to take away from their work?!

I agree! I feel like we HAVe to find something wrong with our classmates work and I don't like that. What if we can't find anything they need to add?? I just put some things down since it's required.

I'm nervous about this class as well but good thing is that C is passing. And also I took the exam and got a 74. It only dropped my overall grade 1 point! So if you do good on the discussion and quizzes I think it's ok.

How did y'all do on the exam/quiz 4

I feel like the test was a lot about delegation on the RNs part and the nursing process.
