NSQIP Clinical Nurse Reviewer

hey all

I've just started a new position at my hospital as the the Surgical Clinical Nurse Reviewer for the NSQIP program - it's brand new to us so I guess I'm going to be the hospital trailblazer!!!

do we have any other Allnurses nurses who have this position at their hospital? if so, how long have you been doing it and how is it going and are you enjoying it??

They just changed the requirement, you no longer need to be a RN to do this position. Good luck with your new position. My advice is to get automated, it is the only way to do the program. Good Luck, enjoy your trip to Chicago and hope it is not too cold.

Oh, that is very discouraging that they now say you don't have to be an RN to do this position! Thanks for the heads-up.

I know this is an old thread but I am new to this site and am in the process of starting new position as NSQIP and I'm so glad I found this discussion thread because it has helped me decide to go forward with the position. Luckily the RN who previously held the position told me the surgeon in charge is very supportive.

I have worked on NSQIP since 2005, I find that there are many changes coming down the road that are not nurse friendly. Good luck, I hope you have automation in place it is a good program and glad to hear some places are still hiring nurses.

I"m curious as to what kind of negative changes you see coming for RNs in this role. What has your experience been?

The strength of NSQIP was founded on the strength of the data. Having a nursing experience means you can draw from your clinical knowledge and experiences. A non nurse will not have that experience. Also just because I am a nurse , I feel nurses subscribe to an ethical base. Next most nurses are not intimidated to speak up to nurses. The training use to be 2 days in Chicago, I thought this was great since you built in a network system of people who are on the same page as you. The online format is not interactive.

My last point, the program has changed and will continue to change. They are talking about radically changing the format, there is a pilot program ongoing.

Thanks so much for the insight. I totally agree with you about the importance of what nurses bring to this role, it's a shame that that is changing. It's similar to what happened in the OR with the use of surgical techs rather than RNs - the role is much more than the tasks, there's judgement and ethics involved.
