hey all

I've just started a new position at my hospital as the the Surgical Clinical Nurse Reviewer for the NSQIP program - it's brand new to us so I guess I'm going to be the hospital trailblazer!!!

do we have any other Allnurses nurses who have this position at their hospital? if so, how long have you been doing it and how is it going and are you enjoying it??

thanks

Mama

When you sign on the ACSNSQIP web page and then conference calls, if you read the minutes to the meeting you see all the nurses listed.

For those of you who don't now what ACS NSQIP, it is a program run by the American College of Surgeons for surgical quality improvement. It has been around in the VA system since the 1990's and fairly new to the private sector.

I have been working with this project since November. It is quite well organized. Have you completed your training?

I will probably here you on the conference calls, that are every Tuesday.

hey, I heard you on the conference call last week................

how's it going? thanks for the PM - I guess I'll get to meet you in June at the conference, eh?

how are you doing so far?

I just started collecting cases in Cycle 20 so I don't have much going on yet but it's pretty interesting so far..............

so far, so good..............

Hey Alexk49 or Mama the nurse

I am about to start this position at my hospital which is also new can anyone tell me a competitive salary in this position? Just need something to compare to. Thanks

I was on vacation last week, sorry for the delayed response. Cycle 2, you are moving along. I had to complete my cases before the lock out period which was April 1st so I feel like I have a fresh start.

Phoebe, feel free to contact me offline.

Basically, whatever your quality improvement salaries are in your area. Usually it is less than the nursing salaries but you should be compensated for your overall experience. Alex

I am contemplating applying for NSQIP Clinical Nurse Reviewer at a hospital near me. I have checked out the web site and it sounds like something I would be interested in. I was looking for feedback on the position- the good, the bad and the ugly. I am pretty autonomous in my present job, have lots of data abstracting experience and have been a nurse for many years.

I would PM you but you have to have 15 posts.

I have been doing NSQIP for 3 years. Things I would look for, if the site has automation, ie Information from your hospital computer to the NSQIP computer gets automatically populated. If no automation you will need an admin or you will be sending the majority of the time typing and not doing any clinical work.

It requires a trip to Chicago for inital training and a yearly conference, this year in San Diego.

The program is a solid program and the data is very meaningful. It is great if you have abstracting experience.

Thanks for the info! After 3 years, do you still like your position?

wow - I can't believe this thread is back in circulation!! where has the time gone??

gigisark, I am no longer a NSQIP SCNR - I worked as such for a little over a year and then went to work for the collaborative that was started in our state (Michigan) to bring together all of the hospitals who do NSQIP - so, although I am not an SCNR any more, I am still involved with the program both at the state and national level....

however, when I was an SCNR, I did like my position very much - lots of automony and the opportunity to do some really good QI work - I enjoyed it so much so that, before I took the position where I am now, we were moving to a different community and I was planning on keeping my SCNR job although the move would have added at least another hour to my round-trip commute (which was already 1 1/2 hrs round-trip)

a word of warning, though, - over the years, I've found that, through my interactions with many SCNR's, how much you enjoy your position is directly proportional to the amount of support that you receive as an SCNR, from your hospital (in terms of resources allocated by your hospital, the understanding & appreciation of the program by your direct supervisor, IT support, cooperation from your Surgeon Champion, the surgeons and their office staff, etc.) - I had a ton of support from the senior leadership at my hospital, my boss was great and my Surgeon Champion was (and still is) awesome and made sure that I got what I needed from the surgeon side of things and that made a big difference but every hospital is different - I don't mean to sound grim - most of the SCNR's I know love their job but I know some who don't.......

hope this helps...........

Thanks for the info! After 3 years, do you still like your position?

I do like the position, but as Others have stated you do need lots of support it can be a lonely position ourwise.

Keep us updated.

Thank you all for your insightful input. I'll let you know how things progress. :)

Thanks for the great info! I am brand new to NSQIP, about to start in the position in the next few weeks! I guess I'll be going to Chicago pretty soon....
