NRP Certification

Published

Hi. I'm starting my first nursing job as a new grad soon and the NICU I will be working in said I have to obtain my NRP certification on my own prior to starting. The job is in a different state so they didn't know where I could get the certification where I currently live. I reached out to some local hospitals but they said they only do classes for current employees. I did a Google search and found places online I can get a certification for $275 but I wasn't sure if these are legit places or not. Anyone have any suggestions on where to get the certification from? I thought the hospital I would be working at would offer me the class there once I started but I guess not so I'm not sure what to do now. Thanks!

I think it odd that they not only want you to have taken NRP prior to starting, but that they expect you to pay for it as well.  Having said that, if it were me, I would not take any NRP course other than the AAP/AHA Neonatal Resuscitation Program.   You have the option to complete the coursework on line, and then find an training center to complete the skills checkoffs.  If you take the 8th edition course, you might consider contacting the unit educator to clarify whether they want you to take the essentials or advanced option.

If you choose to complete a non AAP/AHA program, you should  definately contact the unit's educator to confirm that the program you have chosen is acceptable.

Not all hospitals offer the NRP anymore even if it is a job requirement, some union contracts specify reimbursement for exam and renewals.$275 is average price, check the educators credentialsas a national certification, give the name to future employer and ask if the accept certification from that company. There are many reputable places that teach BLS,IV line certification etc,.ask which workbook they used,it usually has AHA credentials, there is an online component as well as hands on exam ,the workbook usually has a cd for review of an actual resuscitation.
