NPDB vs OIG

Published

Got a letter from NPDB and am wondering how many people have gotten this. More specifically...does this mean that the OIG list is inevitably coming too? I am not on there yet but i just got my NPDB report for a misdeameanor drug posession and obtaining a narcotic by fraud. If i do end up on there can i get off of it while still on probation? I know its up to them on the length for any misdeameanor. Or should i just calm down and stop assuming the worst. Lol

from what I understand, being on the OIG guarantees you a place in the NPDB but the inverse does not always apply. the OIG related to Medicaid/Medicare fraud and signifies that you can not participate in those programs. the NPDB includes people who have messed up in some fashion and have it on record as a red flag. you can get of the NPDB for things like malpractice , professional competence, HIPAA violation, or fraud. you certainly could end up on the oig list, but npdb doesnt mean it's for sure..

I am on the NPDB, I believe I will remain there until the 'conditions' on my license are satisfied. I am not on the OIG list. I think OIG happens when you are charged with Medicare/Medicaid fraud, OR fail to comply with conditions placed on your license, OR have your license suspended or revoked.

@Indiana RN sorry Im always asking you questions but you most closely relate to my situation. I was curious if your license is on probation with the board or just active with monitoring? I thought monitoring was probation but Im finding out they are different and probation requires additional work as far as reporting to board and makes it even harder to get hired. Just curious. ?

Hi, I don't mind answering any questions! I remember how scared and overwhelmed I was in the beginning!! My license is on probation until I finish my RMA. ( 20 months to go!!) Yes, with probation I am required to send a quarterly report to the BON in addition to the quarterly reports I send to INPRP. I found the form online and printed it out. I mail it to the BON. It's due by the end of the month before reports are due to INPRP.

For example, my BON report is due by June 30th and INPRP is July 5th.

It didn't seem to make finding a job any harder than it was just being in INPRP but every 3 months I sheepishly go in my supervisors office, apologize profusely, and ask her to fill out my report for the board, THEN remind her my report for INPRP should be coming to her email soon. I don't think it will ever be less embarrassing but I try to keep my head up! You should too!!! ?

@Indiana RN oh well that aint ***! Lol! (At least not comparatively to what I have already dealt with. Im actually looking forward to going in front of board. It will be like the final step and then i can finish doing whatever it is they want me to do. I hate the waiting and not knowing.

I agree! The unknown is terrible! Honestly, getting a job was the biggest hurdle. besides the occasional time I spend in a lab peeing in a cup I feel like a normal person. When you do go in front of the board, Just be honest. It was embarrassing bc there were tons of people there, nursing students there for school too!! lord, that was the lowest day of my life, but like I said it is all turning around!!

@Indiana RN hey again! Do you know if you HAVE to wait until you were off probation for criminal to grt hired at IU?

This I'm not sure. I was about 1 month off of criminal probation when I was hired but they did a background check and could see my misdemeanor charge.

@Indiana RN did they ask about it in interview...did you put it on app? I talked to a hiring manager for med surg and behavioral health and she said start applying 1-2 months before i want to start working...since im having a baby in september. But i was just curious about what they ask.

No, criminal history never came up and I didn't offer any info. Everybody does a criminal history check so I just waited for that. I figured being in INPRP was not info for one day. lol

@Indiana RN no kidding!!! Its like a big secret you have to come out with.
