Np PedsClinical Sites

Hi. I know I've read it here before, but can someone tell me which clinical sites do not have pediatrics?

I believe it is a requirement for Excelsior to have their nursing students do a ped rotation, so all the hospitals have to have a ped unit to be accredited. Now, if the census is low in the ped unit, which happens some times, you will be assigned an adult in place of your ped patient. This is no fault of Excelsior as they cannot control the census of the participating hospitals. I would just be prepared for a ped patient. Make a mneumonic for their vital signs and the fontanel and also for changing and weighing diapers and you should be fine. If you don't get a ped, all the better for you, but you know you are prepared. It is some kind of theory, what you are not prepared for, you will probably get.

Just plan on practicing on the things I listed above for 10 minutes a day and you should be fine.:typing

Thanks. I really wasn't asking for myself. My clinical is next week in Madison. I'm pretty sure I have read that there are a few hospitals that never have peds, but I'll keep looking. Thanks again!

I had an adult substitute for my pediatric patient in Mansfield -- their peds unit is commonly used as med-surg overflow. However, one of the students I tested with did get a pediatric patient -- an infant. So it's luck of the draw, I guess!

Hmmm...alright. I could have sworn I read that there are a few sites that are guaranteed to have no pediatric patients. Maybe I was fantasizing. Lol. I just hope I get my pediatric patient first like you did. That was a lucky break.

Yep ... if I had to have a pediatric patient, I wanted that patient first, because I'd have extra time to do the careplanning on Friday night! :) I'm actually pretty comfortable with peds, but I won't lie -- I was happy to have an adult substitute! :D

I was wondering, why does everyone try to avoid the pediatric patients? Me myself dont like pediatrics but I noticed that everyone wants to avoid a Peds patient for the CPNE. Is it easier to fail the peds PCS?

I would like to know If I have to pray not to get a peds pt.......lol :)

I don't think it's actually easier to fail peds patients. I'm a bit afraid of small babies for whatever reason. The woman whom I was asking the question for doesn't have any children either. It just makes people nervous. Plus you may have nervous parents looking over your shoulder...I don't know! Lol.
