NP clinical what to expect

I'm starting my first NP clinical rotation next month and wondering what to expect. I will be precepting with a urology NP. I'm going to try to focus on asking questions and learning the new role. What was your first clinical rotation like?

My first clinical course was focused on H&P's so we were expected to spend most of our hours doing that. I did my hours with a cardiology NP so spent a lot of time doing admission H&Ps and also rounding on the floor. We had a head to toe physical assessment check off prior to the start of the rotation so we were expected to hit the ground running at clinical.

I think experiences are as varied as the providers. My first rotation is almost done and my preceptor is keeping me on task by guiding me on how to keep my presentation to him concise. 'Keep it simple and orderly." He iterates the SOAP format and helps me not bounce around from problem to problem without finishing explaining the OLDCARTS of the first complaint.

Good luck to you and have fun! I'm really enjoying it.

Super nervous for when this day comes! Did you guys have to find your own preceptors?

This is apparently still a problem for me, but I'm working on it.

Any tips for better presentation of the patient to you preceptor? (It's hard to divorce myself from the 'nursing habit.' haha. habit. nurses used to wear them?)

Yes I did, and it has taken me over a year to secure everything. I had to file for extensions, when one passed I had to appeal. But it all worked out.

Now, just to get through 2.5 more quarters!
