Now I understand why there is a nursing shortage

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am a new nurse and I am on orientation now for almost 4 weeks at the hospital. I work on a med surge floor.

I am given 8 patients to give medications, assessments, etc etc.

The work is overwhelming and from what i am being told, its like that every where.

i work 12 hour shifts and i cant even eat my lunch for 30 minutes in peace , some one always needs me

I some times feel like walking out

i am starting to question my self.. what the hell did i get my self into

I personally like pt care but my god, you cant give good pt care with so much overwhelming paper work and every one pulling and tugging on you at the same time and try to be accurate about giving medications.

they want me to be the nurse, the secretary, the Aide, and much more.

when the pts need to be cleaned up and you try to find a nurses aide, they disappear so I clean up the pts my self.

what has nursing become

I see why nurses quit so fast

i was sad every time i had to look forward to work and today i told them i quit

I am relieved ,.....actually not even an ounce of regret.

thank god

i did not like that job

i am not sure why but i did not get a good vibe there.

Probably the right decision. What are your plans now?

my plans are to work closer to my area

that hospital was far far away from me any way

There are tolerable places to work as a nurse, but these places are few and far between, and hard to find.

A lot of nurses work many crappy jobs, for a number of years before they find something decent.

Hi Kendal

Try to hang in there, Get the experience for a least a year if you can last that long, once you have that you can take that every where. It will be worth it. then you can go out and try other types of Nursing, most companies like to see at least 1 year Exp. I now work as an asst. Nurse Manager in a large Medical office For Triage Nursing and did Home Health. Try to keep in mind there are other opportunities out there your not stuck anywhere.

I quit yesterday, i could not hang in there any longer

but i have no regrets as to quitting

i am actually relieved

i was way tooo unhappy

i went to that hospital because i heard how prestigious it was and the training was so great and they were so professional and found that in my opinion it did not go like that

all that professionalism thats portrayed is on paper because the reality is different

i was told on the interview that i would have 6-7 pts and instead started out with 8 period

i had to travel 2 1/2 to 3 hrs to get there because i dont drive but i was following prestigious name bla bla bla i was planning to get my license but now i change my mind its all tooo much for me

theres local hospitals in my area that i was told -"dont go there its ghetto people

.... well guess what??? i dont care any more I will go work for the ghetto people because i have learned that all that glitters is not gold

so i might as well work for the ghetto people at least what they give or the behavior they have is what i would expect

as oppose to a prestigius hospital that every one wants me to go to because of the name

well now i know better

Congrats on quitting.

I think there is to much pressure to hang in there and keep trying when we are miserable in a job. If you're unhappy, you're unhappy. no sense in wasting time and effort trying to make yourself be able to stand it.

Hi Kendel

Good luck in what ever you do, I never did hospital nursing, way too risky for first time nurse.

take care

so that only the truly brave hearted souls that could stick it out for the long haul would be going to nursing school.

I guess you're right....People with a brave heart can only survive nursing....

Wow!! I guess if we will all look at nursing not as a profession that could make us rich but a profession that could reach out people who needs help, love and care then I guess it wont be a heartache if you can see someone very happy...right? We should not allow money buy our happiness....only a brave heart can survive nursing....

Rich?????

you can never be rich from nursing

they can not pay nurses enough for putting them selves at risk for catching so many diseases in the hospital etc

people make it sound like nursing pays so much money

not true

after tax is taken out i wonder some times

my husband is a financial analyst and he makes $105,000 per year which is waaaayyy more than what i make

so please

if a person want to make a lot of money they have to go on wall street and maybe become an investment banker or somethingo

by the way .. to update you all

I found another job closer 5 minute walk from my house
