Not getting paid when I call off...

I was told yesterday that I won't get paid for two days I called off sick. I was told I need a doctor's note, or I won't get paid. I have earned the time. I have never been told no before. This is a new policy so as no lay offs will occur that's what we've been told anyway. How do I get a doctor to give me a note even though he/she didn't see me on that day? Anybody experience this?

If you weren't told this at the time of the call-off, and no notice was given about this new policy, then seems to me they'd have to pay you for this one. Now that you know of it, they could hold you to it next time.

That seems fair. If you didn't know and it wasn't part of your initial contract then they need to tell you about the change before making it policy. At least one would like to think so. I would put up a big stink. If your doc knows you well they might write you a note if you go in for a visit, but it doesn't seem like you shoudl even have to do that this time around.

It's ridiculous to require a doctor's note when you could be out with a cold or some diarrhea. Absurd.

Well, at least your place of employment offers sick pay in the first place.

My current workplace offers no sick pay whatsoever, regardless of whether the worker can provide a doctor's note documenting the illness or affliction. If I wish to be paid for a sick day, my only option is to use my PTO (paid time off). My workplace also offers no holiday pay.

A medical environment that offers no sick pay. Lovely. Just when you thought you've heard it all. I didn't even know that was legal for full-time employees. Maybe I live in a bubble. lol

I would check with my HR....and my state laws.

In many states, policies must be gone over with an employee, the employee signs acknowledging receipt of such. I would also ask when this policy went into effect, who was supposed to distribute it and why you weren't notified. In addition, I would put my displeasure at receiving this news after your illness, along with proof of sicktime earned into a letter sending it to your manager and HR. I guarentee you will be paid...if not, I might consider reporting them to your state labor board for unfair practices.

For those of you with PTO, it is the greatest solution to time off offered if administered correctly. The theory behind it is that all time off will be scheduled, instead of calling out sick at the last minute. No guilt because time is YOUR OWN to use.

Where I am at now...vacation can be broken into hours, holiday must be used in full days, sick time cannot be used for sick kids and a variety of other rules. Hate it!

PTO is usually all the days you would normally get if divided, only you can use it anyway you want-I instituted it's use in my old company (old life)-if someone called out sick, you knew they really were. Was always staffed, time out was planned, and employees who were sick well that was a loss you could deal with. Instead, lets say everyone at the end of the year trying to use up sick time so they don't lose it!

God Bless the State of Nevada and its "at will", anti union atmosphere! I guess that they are doing you a favor to give you a job, and actually pay you too! The next thing you know, you will have to pay them to work at the facility. Is this really the state that is crying for nurse? Why am I not surprised? You gotta love it.

NJ is an at will state too, however, there are still HR policies there are still rules.

It doesn't stop there. I was once a full-time nurse at a workplace that did not offer health insurance to any of its workers. It seems ironic that we were providing healthcare at this facility, yet we did not have the coverage to manage our own healthcare needs.

I've enjoyed far superior benefits at all of my previous non-nursing jobs.

I actually worked at a facility that placed you on 3 months probabtion for calling in sick. I remember working one time with a fever of 103 and a nose that would not quit running. It seemed that everyone coming in for treatment had the same thing so it is pretty safe to say it was a pretty nasty virus. I was thanked over and over by management for coming in. One would think I would have been sent home but instead I was treated to forced overtime. I also seem to remember one of the nurses having emergency surgery. She was written up and placed on probation for missing work. She needed additional surgery but had to wait for her probation to end so that she could have surgery and then again be placed on probation for three months. Because the surgery did not fall under the FMLA she was unable to really do much about it. Her time out would only be a few days.

I no longer work at this facility.
