Northern VA/DC hospitals, which to choose??

Published

My request form for my senior preceptorship is due tommorow and I'm still on the fence as to which hospital to choose. As an Army wife, my first choice had been WalterReed, to get some experience in the military hospitals, after I get some experience under my belt I'd like to work in one. Because of the merger with Bethesda, they are taking any "preceptees", I was told Dewitt might though (Fort Belvior). My other top hospitals were Inova Fairfax and/or Fair Oaks, George Washington, or Washington Hospital Center, of course I'm also thinking Dewitt. Should I choose the hospital I have the best chance at getting a job afterward? Anyone have any insight as to which would be best for my preceptorship, I chose oncology and medsurg as my top 2 picks unit wise. Any input is appreciated!!

If you're looking at your choice as a prospective employer, I'd pick one closest to home! They're all excellent, so limiting your commute might be a good way to help make a choice. Good luck!

Choose the one you most want to work at when you become an RN and network like crazy while you're there!

I don't work at an INOVA hospital, but one of the RN's I know works HR there and the hiring for new grads doesnt look that great! As well last yr I chatted on the phone and email with a VA recruiter and the pay for the 1st yr was rather low, one starts off on a low pay grade, around $30,000 a yr, but he stated it would jump up a fair bit after the 1st yr was completed. I believe doing a preceptorship really increases ur chances, or it could decrease them, if staff doesnt like you,lol I always brought in baked goods, lol worked for me,lol

LOL Flames is a man :D.

I second the vote for close to home! I looove not having to commute, and after I get a year under my belt it will be easier to go somewhere else if I decide to. The first job is hardest to get as a new grad with no experience.
