Northern California Nursing Salaries

Published

I am a nursing student, ready to begin my first year of clinical. Ne ways, I know a few people who have graduated from my program (San Joaquin Delta College Nursing Program), and are making $100,000 a year with their ADN. I wonder if anyone can confirm that aveage in California. I am going for my bachlors degree, but I am wondering if their is much of a pay difference between your ADN and BSN?

Hi Maria,

I'd check out some other hospitals in that area. It doesn't sound like enough, especially since you've got experience already. I'm in Northern California and started at about $30/hr as a new grad RN back in June.

hi! I know La Mirada, Cali is not a part of northern california (not sure though:rolleyes: ) but id like to know how much is the starting pay per hour in that area. im an experienced nurse (clinical nurse specialist) from australia and the agency that recruited me offered to pay me 25-28$/hour. excluding the fringe benefits, overtime, nite diffentials. is that a fair pay?

ta!

My husband and I are looking to relocate to sunnier, warmer weather and are looking at Chico, CA. I have been an RN for 6 months and am wondering what the starting salary in Chico is as well as working conditions at the hospital and/or clinics in the area. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Dats,

I live in that area - good choice! It's a great place to live (although, the housing and rental prices have been going up the last few years). I would recommend that you call or e-mail the recruiters at the local hopitals to find out about current RN openings and pay scale (the pay seems to vary a bit and changes so frequently). There are 3 hospitals in this area:

1. Enloe Hospital in Chico

2. Feather River Hospital in Paradise

3. Oroville Hospital in Oroville

There are also many other job opportunities in the area - home health agencies (although, maybe not such a good idea for a new RN), clinics, Dr's offices...

Good luck to you!!

Christine

hi does anybody experienced to do per diem nursing in Nothern Ca(SF)what is the highest hourly rate that you can get. i've heard that it's going as much as$75 dollars?can't believe it, maybe including the night diff and weekend pay.I'm trying to compare the rates in LA and SF. i know in LA nurses are only getting 34's base rate and perdiem of 50.do you have an what hospital in LA or SF pays as much as 75 dollars per diem.i'm also interested in working weekend only. is there such a sched as thisthat i could get an extra money?.Would appreciate getting info from you. i'm here in NC heading to move in Ca.For now i'm looking at travelling first but after some time i wanna look for a hosp that give sign in bonus and settle down if i found the right one. appreciate all your inputs.

The only way that you are going to get that is with double-time and that doesn't happen all of the time. Not routinely.

Sorry, but do not believe everything that you hear, such as $1000 per day, every day year round................there are many rumors out there.

Per diem at my hospital (I've been told by nurses who work on my floor) are $71/hr plus shift diff. New grad pay is over $40/hr. I work in SF. I hope this answers your question.

Just curious, SherBear..where do you work?..I could check your hospital out:wink2: ...myself, I've just recently moved to Kaiser SF (3 mos ago) from one of the kaisers in SoCal..the pay is definitely higher..perdiem RNs in my hospital say that their rate is 20% of their base rate (based on CNA contract based on experience) plus shift diff.

HeartsWideOpen,

Do you work for an agency? What is the best/stable choice for someone new to the area? Stat with a hospital or agency?

My aunt who had no experience transferred to a university straight after she received her ADN from the local community college and graduated with a BSN in California. Right off she became a head nurse working 50 hours a week between two hospitals. I do not know the details of her type of employment (could be agency or PRN) but I know that she reported to my mother (her sister) and visiting family from out of state that she was making $120,000 a year. I know she is deteremined and is energy driven so I can picture her as a head nurse being in charge and that is why I could never work for her. It would be actually kinda scarey working for her LOL. But yeah, so you can make that much in California because she is living proof of that. She works hard but living in California with the high cost of living, she makes a really good salary. Her husband has been working in a medical lab for many years so I would not be suprised is his job provides the health insurance for her family of 4 and she could be just as well working for a high paying agency not needing the health benefits that would come with a lower paying but regular "staff" member employment at her hospital.

If you're talking about a specific nurse at a specific hospital in Stockton, this nurse works TONS of overtime, sometimes 7 days/week. Do you want to work that much?? Sorry, I have a life outside the hosptial. Yes I graduated from that program and have my BSN. But no way do I want to work myself to death--life is too short. Nurses in the Bay Area may come close to making that much--again with lots of overtime, but they pay a whole lot more to live there.
