Northern Alberta Nursing

I am considering applying for a bursary in which I would owe one year of service after graduation for every year of assistance. I would have to commit to working in Northern Alberta.

just wondering if anyone has any insight into what work is like in Northern Alberta. I have a young family so we would need to relocate, but the tuition help would be such a help, it's hard to pass up!

How far north is north?

Will you be in an outpost position or clinic?

Would you feel comfortable as a new grad being perhaps the sole healthcare provider for 100s of kms?

Small towns usually have one school for your children. Are you a heavily outdoors family?

Unless you answered yes to those questions, I'd take the loans. If you fail to work out your obligation you will have to repay your sponsor. Is it a band funded position?

So Northern Alberta is like Medicine Hat, Grande Prairie and area. There are hopsitals as well as clinics. I'm sure there would be outpost positions.

They are quite clear about repaying the bursary if you do not fulfill the time commitment. We are a pretty outdoorsy family, and my children love the outdoors.

The funding is through the Regional Health services serving northern alberta.

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

Ummm. No. Medicine Hat is in the southeast of the province. Grande Prairie is in the northwest along with Peace River, High Level, and Valleyview. Slave Lake, Fort Vermilion and Wabasca are more central. Fort McMurray is in the northeast as are Lac la Biche, Fort MacKay, Fort Chipewyan, Cold Lake and Bonnyville. These are all communities that our pediatric transport team travel to for sick children.

Yeah sorry that was my mistake. I was thinking about Medicine Hat when I meant to write Fort McMurray.....

Specializes in Medical/Surgical among others.

Hmm. Would you mind sharing the link to the website or PM'ing me with that?

Looking for RN work, also.
